https://tumlive-docs.pages.devDocumentation for GoCast, a system for broadcasting and recording lecture halls. Includes guides for self-hosting via Docker Swarm, configuring Traefik, and managing network components like Runners, Workers, and Edge servers. Covers features such as Video On Demand (VoD), live chat, and automatic auditorium broadcasting.
What's inside GoCast
- GoCast (used as TUM-Live at the Technical University of Munich) is a fully self-hosted, open-source platform designed for live-streaming and recording lectures. It is licensed under the MIT license and provides full data control by allowing users to run the software on their own servers.
Overview of Video On Demand (VoD) features
Video On Demand (VoD) allows educators to host and stream video content to students. It supports two primary workflows: manually uploading pre-recorded videos to the server for sharing, and automatically uploading recordings of live classes so students who missed the session can watch them later.Overview of GoCast (TUM-Live) platform
GoCast is a fully self-hosted, open-source platform designed for the live-streaming and recording of lectures. It is currently used at the Technical University of Munich as TUM-Live. The software is licensed under the MIT license, allowing users full control over their data by running the platform on their own servers.Download MP4 files from HLS Edge server
Video files are now downloaded directly from the HLS Edge server rather than being pulled from mass storage. This change reduces disk space usage by approximately 50% and removes the dependency on mass storage for video file retrieval.Self-stream lectures using external software
Lecturers can choose to stream their content manually using third-party software. OBS is the recommended tool for this purpose, though other software like Zoom is also supported.Download MP4 files from HLS Edge server
v1.2.26Video files are now downloaded directly from the HLS edge server rather than being pulled from mass storage. This change reduces dependence on mass storage and can save up to 50% of disk space, as the long-term goal is to store only HLS segments and discard MP4 files after HLS stream conversion.Use MediaMTX for Selfstreams
Selfstreams are now delivered to the worker using MediaMTX, replacing the previously used nginx with the rtmp module for improved reliability and maintenance. MediaMTX is embedded within the worker's docker container to simplify deployment and self-streaming to any worker.Stream and record lectures using GoCast SMPs
GoCast provides Streaming Media Processors (SMPs) installed in many TUM lecture halls. These devices automatically capture lecture video and audio and transmit them to GoCast servers for live broadcasting and optional recording, allowing students to view content remotely or asynchronously.GoCast Privacy and Deployment Model
GoCast is designed to be privacy-friendly and open-source. It supports self-hosting, ensuring that all streaming data is processed by and stored on the organization's own servers rather than a third-party cloud.Broadcast and record lectures using GoCast SMPs
GoCast provides automated streaming and recording for lectures in many TUM lecture halls. This is achieved through installed Streaming Media Processors (SMPs) that capture video and audio and transmit it to GoCast servers for broadcasting and archival.Understand GoCast network deployment architecture
The GoCast network follows a hybrid management model where the main instance is managed centrally by TUM, while individual node clusters are connected and managed by participating organizations. Organizations have the flexibility to allocate resources to each service based on expected usage and can optionally deploy additional services, such as the Voice Service for subtitling live streams and Video on Demand (VoD) content.Understand GoCast organization types and scoping
In GoCast, an 'organization' represents an entity responsible for processing data (distributing livestreams and recordings to specific resources like Workers/Runners and VoD Services).
Unlike TUMOnline's strict hierarchy (School > Department > Chair), GoCast organizations are flexible. While they often align with TUMOnline organizations, a GoCast organization can be created for any entity that needs to manage its own resources independently, such as a specific department or chair (Lehrstuhl). This allows smaller entities with their own data centers to host lectures using their own resources independently of a larger parent organization.
