Understand the Taiwanese Bird Naming System (hō-miâ lí-lōo)
The 'Online Taiwanese Bird Name List' follows a specific hierarchy and set of rules to standardize bird names in Taiwanese Hokkien, ensuring they align with modern biological classifications while preserving local heritage. The naming logic is as follows:
- Priority to Local Names: If a native Taiwanese Hokkien common name exists, it is used first.
- Handling Generic Terms: If a local name is a generic term applying to multiple species, adjectives are added to distinguish between them (referencing English, Japanese, or Mandarin usage).
- Fallback Strategy: If no local name exists, the system checks for names from the Japanese colonial era. If still unavailable, it follows the 'Taiwan Bird List' from the Chinese 野鳥協會 (Wild Bird Society), while adjusting for Taiwanese Hokkien phonetics and referencing English/Japanese descriptions and physical appearance.
- Classification Names: Taxonomic classification names are prioritized to be in native Taiwanese Hokkien.
- Orthography: Romanization and Chinese characters follow the standards set by the Ministry of Education (MOE).
Official sources such as the Public Television Service (PTS) Taiwanese New Word Dictionary and the MOE Dictionary of Common Taiwanese Hokkien Phrases are prioritized.
