What's inside Chronicle

  1. Overview of Delegate Plugins for Custom System Behavior

Delegate plugins (introduced in version 2.3) allow organization developers to execute custom JavaScript by consuming internal system events. This feature is intended for advanced customizations that are specific to an organization and not suitable for a general rollout to all customers. Common use cases include modifying form behavior, such as restricting or removing specific fields (e.g., removing a 'Status' field from a Matter create/edit form to prevent users from viewing or modifying it).
  2. Overview of Blackout External Redaction workflow

External Redaction allows users to redact Excel and PDF documents outside of Relativity (using tools like Adobe Acrobat or Microsoft Excel) and then upload them back into the system. These externally redacted files are associated with the Blackout markup set and can be included in Production Preparation projects and native productions as if they were redacted within Blackout. Uploading an externally redacted document automatically clears any existing failed markups for that document.
  3. Overview of Blackout PDF redaction in Relativity

Blackout extends the Relativity viewer with tools to manually redact PDFs, remove attachments, and eliminate annotations. Markups are not immediately burned into the PDF; they are stored as overlays. To permanently apply (burn-in) these markups, a Production Preparation project is required. Users can sample the marked-up document using the 'Download Marked Up Document' button on the viewer toolbar.
  4. Review and interpret quality control entries in the Markup Review Pane

To review QC entries, open the Blackout Markup Review Pane and select the 'Markup Review' sub-menu. Each column in the review table provides specific metadata about the markup:

    • Source: A 'Blackout B' icon indicates automation; a pencil icon indicates manual markup.
    • Approved: Contains actions to approve or reject the markup.
    • Page: The page number where the markup is located.
    • Markup Type: Specifies if the markup is a redaction or a highlight.
    • Match Text: The specific text matched by an automated rule.
    • Rule: The specific Blackout PDF project rule that triggered the match.

Users can filter these columns by clicking the filter button to the right of the column header.

  5. Blackout Markup Set Overview

Blackout integrates directly with Relativity Markup Sets for the current workspace. Multiple users can work on the same document simultaneously using different markup sets; each user's redactions and highlights are saved and retained automatically based on their selected set.
  6. Prepare for the Blackout Certified Exam (BCE)

The Blackout Certified Exam (BCE) validates a user's proficiency with Blackout's front-end features and capabilities. It is recommended for individuals with at least 2 months of experience using the platform. The exam is free for currently licensed Blackout customers.
  7. Propagate markups to duplicate Excel documents using Spreadsheet Propagation

The Spreadsheet Propagation project allows you to propagate markups from source Excel documents to duplicate documents across a workspace. It identifies duplicates using a specific document field, such as an MD5 Hash.

Note: This project is scheduled to be discontinued. Users are encouraged to migrate to the Blackout Migration Project for enhanced functionality.

  8. Understand how Blackout automated PDF scanning works

Blackout scans searchable text content within PDFs based on provided words, terms, phrases, or regular expressions. It identifies and redacts or highlights text in searchable blocks and properties, including page text, headers, footers, text-based annotations, form data, and field properties.

    Key Constraints:

    • Only text-searchable blocks are scanned automatically.
    • Images and multimedia content are NOT scanned for text in automated projects; these must be redacted manually during Quality Control (QC).
  9. Access and navigate the Client Administration tab in Relativity

Delegate Client Administrators can access the Client Administration tab upon logging into Relativity, where it appears alongside the workspace tab. This area provides centralized management for users, groups, matters, and workspaces, as well as access to audit information. The specific sub-tabs available to a user are determined by their assigned profiles and associated permissions.
  10. Understand Delegate Profiles in Relativity

Delegate profiles allow system administrators to grant specific groups of users (such as project managers, consultants, or client managers) the ability to manage users, groups, matters, and workspaces for one or more assigned clients. This system provides granular control over which groups can use Delegate and which specific administrative functions they are permitted to perform.
  11. Automate PDF attachment redaction during project setup

PDF attachments can be redacted automatically as part of an Automated PDF Project. This is configured by selecting the appropriate checkmark option on the project setup page. Note that files redacted via the automated process will appear in the Attachment Redaction Tool but will not appear in the quality control panel.
  12. Manage permissions for Blackout mass actions in Relativity

To grant users or groups access to Blackout mass actions, a System Administrator must configure permissions within the workspace settings. This allows users to perform bulk operations on documents to prepare them for review or modify markups.
    1. Log into Relativity as a System Administrator.
    2. Navigate to the target workspace.
    3. Go to Workspace Admin > Workspace Details tab.
    4. Click on Other Settings.
    5. Select a group from the Select a Group dropdown.
    6. Grant access to the required Blackout mass actions.
