What's inside Food Commerce
- The FoodCommerce default theme is a 'vanilla' theme based on Bootstrap V5. It is designed to be used as-is or as a starting point for developing a custom theme. It primarily utilizes standard Bootstrap styles and colors.
Manage and understand live delivery slots
Live delivery slots are the bookable time windows displayed to shoppers on the storefront. A slot is automatically removed from the storefront when either all available slots within that window are filled or when the delivery date and lead times make the slot no longer viable for the retailer.
Retailers can manage these slots via the "live slots" tab within the delivery scheme in the control panel. Slots are automatically removed from the control panel once the date has passed.
Manage user roles and store access
To maintain security, create separate user accounts for each person managing an online store and assign them specific roles based on their functions. User accounts are tied to individuals, not stores; therefore, a single user can be associated with multiple stores (e.g., a consultant managing multiple clients). Users can view all stores they have access to via the 'subscriptions' menu.Understand Delivery Schemes and their role in checkout
Delivery schemes are required for an online shop to function. They define how shoppers specify their delivery requirements by selecting a delivery slot before checking out their order. At least one delivery scheme must be configured for the checkout process to work.Manage product organization and visibility in FoodCommerce
Products in the store are organized using categories, attributes, and producers to improve shopper experience and searchability:
- Categories: All products must be assigned to at least one primary category before they can be added. Sub-categories should be used to prevent oversized pages and improve organization.
- List Order: Use the 'list order' setting to control the sequence in which categories, products, and attributes appear on the storefront.
- Attributes: Use attributes to highlight key product information for shoppers.
- Producers: Link products to producers to provide information about the product's provenance.
- Search Optimization: Product names and descriptions are indexed by internal store search and external search engines (like Google). Include relevant keywords in these fields to improve discoverability.
- Images: Consistent image quality and proportions are recommended for a professional look. If no image is provided, the system displays a default placeholder image.
Use Related Products for cross-selling
Related products are used to cross-sell items to shoppers. They are displayed on the 'product added' page (/pa/) specifically after a shopper adds a product to their basket from a product detail page (/p/).Manage and display product Producers
Producers are entities used to inform shoppers about the origin of products and provide details about the makers. Producers are linked to individual products via the "general" tab of the product settings. When a shopper visits a product detail page (/p/), they can navigate to the producer page (/d/), which lists all products associated with that specific producer.Understand how order locking is calculated using lead times
In FoodCommerce, an order is 'locked' (status changes from 'open' to 'picking in progress') based on a calculation involving the delivery date and lead times. The overnight locking process triggers an order to lock if today's date matches either of these two conditions:
- Delivery Date - Dispatch Lead Time - Preparation Lead Time = Today's Date
- Delivery Date - Dispatch Lead Time - Longest Product Lead Time (among all items in the order) = Today's Date
Use the Dictionary data type
A Dictionary is a collection of unique keys and their associated values.
Constraints:
- Keys: Must be unique and can only be of type boolean, date, numeric, or text.
- Values: Can be of any data type.
Configure the Home Page and featured products
The Home Page uses template parts for its heading, main text, and meta description (which should be limited to 160 characters).
To display products on the home page, mark individual products as 'featured' in their overview settings. For optimal layout, the total number of featured products should be divisible by three to ensure they display in full rows.
Access web request information using the Request object
TheRequestobject provides detailed information about the current web request. It can be used to identify the client's network details, the request method, security status, and the specific URL or path being accessed. It also provides access to data submitted via forms or query strings.Remove a user from a store
The store owner can remove a user from their store to revoke their access. Removing a user from a store does not delete the user's global account, as the account is linked to the individual and not the specific store.
