Documentation for SJK, an interregional collaboration project in the Norwegian specialist health service developing standardized clinical journals for cancer domains. Built on the openEHR international standard, the project integrates with DIPS Arena and the Cancer Registry (FHI) to facilitate data flow across specialties for breast, prostate, sarcoma, and head and neck cancers.

What's inside SJK

  1. Overview of SJK Cancer Domains and Regional Responsibility

SJK covers four cancer domains within the Norwegian specialist health service. Each domain is managed by a working group consisting of clinicians, health ICT specialists, and modelers from all regions. The current status and responsible regions are as follows:

    • Head and Neck Cancer (Hode- og halskreft): Responsible regions Helse Vest / HSØ. Web version under test; production at OUS (classic since 2024).
    • Breast Cancer (Brystkreft): Responsible region Helse Nord. In production at OUS (as of 15.06.2026).
    • Sarcoma (Sarkom): Responsible region Helse Vest. Currently under development.
    • Prostate Cancer (Prostata): Responsible region Helse Nord. Awaiting clinical feedback; production planned for Helse Nord.
  2. Overview of the SJK Breast Cancer Diagnostic Form solution

The breast cancer diagnostic form (utredningsskjema for brystkreft) is a clinical production tool in SJK. It provides structured diagnostics, linking to tumor-specific documents, and export functionality to the Cancer Registry (Kreftregisteret), including a defined status for 'no further treatment' (ingen videre behandling).
  3. Overview of SJK Cancer Domains and Implementation Status

SJK covers four specific cancer domains within the Norwegian specialist health service. Each domain is managed by a working group consisting of clinicians, health ICT specialists, and modelers from all regions.

  4. Overview of the SJK Prostate module

The Prostate module is built on an openEHR foundation, consistent with other cancer domains in the SJK solution. It is currently ready for clinical feedback from users in Helse Nord, with acceptance testing being planned.
  5. Overview of the Sarcoma module for bone and soft tissue tumors

The Sarcoma module is designed for the investigation of bone and soft tissue tumors (ONK). Current development focuses on mapping locations to ICD-10 via Bifrost integration, generating summaries within the investigation document, and determining the terminology strategy for rare diseases.
  6. Integrate SJK with the National Prostate Cancer Register (NORPREG)

NORPREG is directly integrated with the SJK prostate module. A high-priority requirement (PRI 1) for NORPREG is the ability to report follow-up data (oppfølgingsdata) to ensure register quality, which is targeted for the next version (v2.0) of the reporting form.
  7. Integrate clinical data with the Norwegian Cancer Registry (Kreftregisteret)

SJK enables clinical data to flow directly from the electronic health record (journal) to national quality registries, such as Kreftregisteret, to eliminate double registration. Current initiatives include the revision of sarcoma reports (sarkommelding), defining 'no cancer treatment' across cancer types, and developing common concept and code sets for all cancer treatments.
  8. SJK Project Overview and Vision

SJK is an interregional collaboration project within the Norwegian specialist health service. Its primary goal is to develop common, standardized electronic health record (EHR) solutions for cancer treatment across all four health regions. The project focuses on creating a foundation for structured documentation to ensure clinical information is available, comparable, and reusable, supporting both daily clinical work and national quality registries/AI analysis.
  9. Understand the 'Side for Kreft' clinical view

The 'Side for Kreft' (Cancer Page) is the clinical view in DIPS that aggregates cancer-specific documents for clinicians. It is designed to work in conjunction with tumor-specific documents to reduce the documentation burden and support web-based solutions.
  10. SJK Shared Technical Architecture

All SJK cancer domains utilize a shared architectural foundation to ensure consistency and interoperability:

    • openEHR-based data model: Templates are subject to quality assurance (QA) in a common modeling forum.
    • DIPS resource packages: Delivered and maintained by DIPS.
    • National Registry Export: Data is exported to the Cancer Registry (Kreftregisteret/FHI) and/or NORPREG.
    • 'Side for Kreft': A shared clinical view within DIPS that links related documents together.
  11. Head and Neck cancer module deployment status

The Head and Neck (Hode/hals) module is the first cancer type implemented in SJK. The classic DIPS version has been in production since 2024. A new web-based version is currently under development and undergoing clinical testing, focusing on data reuse logic and integration with other documents.
  12. Develop generic diagnostic documents and treatment summaries

The working group for 'Generisk utredningsdokument og Behandlingsoppsummering' (Generic Diagnostic Document and Treatment Summary) develops common documents applicable to all types of cancer. This includes a generic diagnostic document covering the entire patient journey and a standardized treatment summary. The group is led by Liv Laugen (OUS) and John Tore Valand (HVIKT).
