https://openlm.com/documentationDocumentation for the OpenLM Platform, including guides for the Reporting Data API, License Access Control (LAC), and automation tools such as License Harvesting, Subscription Optimizer, and Process Manager. It covers identity alignment, anonymization for GDPR compliance, and detailed changelogs for cloud components like the AI Proxy, Broker Hub, and Directory Synchronization Service (DSS).
What's inside OpenLM
- Product Discovery builds a live inventory of software installed across an organization's workstations. It uses the OpenLM Workstation Agent to scan machines, filters out operating-system noise, normalizes results, and matches applications against the SAM Catalog to provide a deduplicated view of what is deployed, where, and for whom. This complements the entitlement records maintained in Software Asset Management (SAM).
Overview of Users and Groups management
The Users and Groups section of the OpenLM Platform is used to manage entities for license usage attribution. This includes monitored users (people consuming licenses), groups, workstations, and aliases used to consolidate duplicate identities.
To access this area: Open Navigation (grid icon in the header) and select Users → Users and Groups.
Permissions: Basic actions like searching, filtering, and exporting are available to all signed-in users. Administrative permissions are required for creating, editing, importing, and deleting records.
Overview of the OpenLM Platform
OpenLM is a software license management and software asset management (SAM) platform designed for engineering, scientific, and technical environments. It collects usage data from license servers and workstations to provide reports for compliance, cost optimization, and access control. It supports over 100 license managers, including FlexNet, DSLS, Sentinel RMS, Reprise, LM-X, and cloud-based platforms like Autodesk Cloud.Overview of the OpenLM MCP Connector
The OpenLM MCP Connector is a bridge between AI assistants and the OpenLM reporting database, built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP) standard. It allows users to query tenant-specific software license management data using natural language. The connector translates natural language questions into GraphQL API calls, retrieves the data from the OpenLM database, and returns the results to the AI assistant for formatting.
Availability: This connector is available only for the OpenLM cloud platform (US and EU tenants) and is not available for on-premises deployments.
Overview of the Broker Hub
The Broker Hub is the central console for managing OpenLM Brokers installed on license servers. It allows administrators to approve newly discovered Brokers, monitor health, perform remote upgrades, restart services, and remove obsolete Brokers. It also provides management tabs for SaaS Agents and the AI Proxy service.
To access the Broker Hub: Open Navigation (grid icon in the header) and select Brokers → Broker Hub.
Overview of OpenLM Identity management
The Identity service in the OpenLM Platform is used to manage sign-in accounts (users who log into the UI), configure Single Sign-On (SSO) with external providers, and generate authorization files for OpenLM components. It is a core system product and is automatically activated for all accounts.
Access Path: Open Navigation (grid icon in header) → Platform Administration → Identity.
Overview of OpenLM Virtual License Manager (VLM)
The Virtual License Manager (VLM) is a cloud-based tool designed to manage and process licenses for the FlexNet Embedded license manager. It allows for the creation of Virtual License Managers and Virtual Pools from physical license features to allocate licenses to specific users or devices on a one-to-one basis. VLM requires a registered account on the OpenLM Portal and is currently compatible exclusively with the OpenLM Platform.Overview of Subscription Optimizer
Subscription Optimizer reduces cloud subscription costs by reallocating unused seats in near real-time. It ensures eligible users get access when needed while eliminating wasted assignments. It integrates with the OpenLM Agent, Process Manager, License Access Control (LAC), End-User Services (EUS), and the SAS Agent to interact with vendor APIs.
Supported Platforms:
- Autodesk Cloud: Reassignment checks occur approximately every 30 seconds.
- LinkedIn Sales Navigator: Reassignment checks occur approximately every 60 minutes.
Overview of License Servers management in OpenLM
The License Servers section of the OpenLM Platform allows administrators to monitor real-time license usage and server health, manage connected servers, and handle the discovery of new servers via the OpenLM Broker.
To access this section: Open Navigation (grid icon in the header) $\rightarrow$ Licenses and Features $\rightarrow$ License Servers.
Overview of Virtual License Manager (VLM)
Virtual License Manager (VLM) allows the allocation of software licenses to users or devices without requiring a direct tie to a physical license server. It currently supports FlexNet Embedded license managers. To access VLM, open the Navigation grid icon in the OpenLM Platform header and select Licenses and Features → Virtual License Manager. Note that VLM must be activated for the account in OpenLM Products before use.Overview and requirements for OpenLM AutoCAD Plugin (Legacy)
The OpenLM AutoCAD Plugin is a legacy software component (v25/v26) designed to save user work, close AutoCAD, and release licenses. It is compatible only with OpenLM Platform and cannot be installed on the same machine as the OpenLM Workstation Agent.
Requirements:
- An OpenLM Platform account.
- Installed AutoCAD (excluding AutoCAD LT series).
- For AutoCAD version 2020 and above, Autodesk Cloud subscriptions are supported.
Default Installation Path:
C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins\OpenLM_AutoCAD_Plugin.bundleOverview of Agents Hub
Agents Hub manages and orchestrates connected Workstation Agents. It allows administrators to configure agent settings, manage Personal Dashboards, define which websites are monitored, and review recorded touch point events.
To access Agents Hub: Open Navigation (grid icon in the header) and select Agents → Agents Hub.
