OpenCodes Online Platform for Building Codes
website·Indexed 29 days ago
https://opencodes.netlify.app/docs/An online platform designed to make building codes more accessible and integrate validation and coordination tools into the design process. The platform provides open data access to Ukrainian State and industry building norms (DBN), including specific standards such as DBN V 1.1-7 (Fire Safety of Construction Objects), DBN B 2-2-12, and DBN A 2-2-3.
What's inside OpenCodes
- OpenCodes is an online platform designed to make building codes easier to use and integrate automatic validation and approval tools into the design process. The project aims to solve the lack of digitalization in the construction industry by transforming static digital documents into a functional platform that reduces errors and construction costs.
Overview of Open Codes Platform
Open Codes is an online platform for working with building codes. It aims to modernize the construction industry's regulatory base by moving away from 'online paper' (static digital documents) toward a structured, open data environment. The platform provides tools for searching, commenting on, and grouping specific regulatory provisions, as well as interactive navigation between related normative acts and a dictionary of terms.Determine fire spread group for structural elements
The purpose of this test method is to determine the dimensions of structural damage outside the fire-impact zone under regulated conditions. This method applies to structures requiring a fire spread group classification, suspended ceilings, air ducts, and pipelines. It does not apply to opening fillers, floor coverings, roofing, or cladding.OpenCodes platform capabilities and goals
OpenCodes is an online platform designed to digitize building codes and regulations. Its primary goal is to make building norms easier to use and integrate automatic validation and approval tools into the design process to save time, prevent errors, and reduce construction costs. Key capabilities include:
- Search and commenting on individual regulatory provisions.
- Interactive navigation between linked regulatory acts.
- An interactive dictionary of terms.
- Conversion of tables and specifications into machine-readable formats (CSV, JSON, XML).
- Translation of regulatory text into program code for automated compliance checking of design decisions.
- IFC model verification based on the openBIM concept.
- Development of plugins for popular design software (e.g., Autodesk Revit) to automate building code compliance checks.
Scope of Pre-project Works (передпроектні роботи)
Pre-project works are performed before the formal design process to determine fundamental volume-spatial and urban planning solutions. These include:
- Developing preliminary conceptual architectural proposals (fore-sketches).
- Proposing the placement of construction objects on land plots (justification of location, required territory, and construction conditions).
- Developing technological and engineering characteristics of the object.
- Drafting assignments for engineering surveys.
- Measuring and inspecting buildings slated for reconstruction, capital repair, or technical re-equipment.
- Other works necessary to initiate the design process.
Define objectives for transport development in the Comprehensive Territorial Scheme (KST)
The primary goal of the KST regarding transport is to determine the fundamental directions and timelines for developing the main street and road network, as well as urban, suburban, and external transport. The planning must ensure passenger and freight transportation needs are met while adhering to standards for travel time, road safety, environmental protection, passenger comfort, and the efficient use of energy, land, and labor resources. Priority directions should be determined based on the socio-economic and planning characteristics of the city.Preserve traditional character of historical settlements and cultural heritage sites
World Heritage sites, cultural heritage objects (as defined by the Law of Ukraine 'On Protection of Cultural Heritage'), and the traditional environment of monuments, ensembles, and historical architectural-urban formations within historical areas of settlements listed in the List of Historical Settlements of Ukraine, as well as historical-cultural reserves, are subject to protection. The use of these territories is subject to special regulation.Scope of project documentation standards for construction and reconstruction
These norms define the required composition and content of project documentation for the following activities: new construction, reconstruction, capital repairs, and technical re-equipment of buildings, structures of any purpose (including complexes or parts thereof), and linear objects of engineering and transport infrastructure.
Note that additional requirements for industry-specific objects are established by sectoral construction norms and regulatory documents. Specific requirements for the restoration of cultural heritage sites, objects constructed outside Ukraine using budget investments, emergency liquidation, and the conservation/de-conservation of construction objects are governed by separate regulatory documents that incorporate these general norms.
Define the primary objects of urban planning
The primary objects of urban planning design are the territories of administrative-territorial units and their constituent parts.Conduct a comprehensive environmental assessment for urban planning
A comprehensive environmental assessment must be developed based on the following overview characteristics:
- Location (considering physical-geographic zoning of Ukraine, relief, and hydrological properties)
- Climate (per DSTU-N B V.1.1-27, identifying meteorological risks)
- Geology (including mining-geological risks and quaternary deposit structures for foundations)
- Hydrogeology (suitability of groundwater for communal drinking water, including sanitary protection zones per DSP 173-96 and DBN V.2.5-74)
- Surface Waters (river classification and water level regimes for 1% and 10% probability floods)
- Natural Health Resources (characteristics from 'Resort Health Resources of Ukraine' and sanitary protection zones)
- Soil Cover (typology, fertility, and identification of especially valuable soils)
- Mineral Resources (significance, class, type, industrial development level, and application field)
- Forest Resources (based on State Forest Fund data and optimal forest cover for the region)
- Landscape (elements of the ecological network: forests, nature reserves, water bodies, marshes, public green spaces, water protection zones, and coastal protection strips)
- Engineering and Construction Assessment (suitability for construction based on combined factors)
General fire safety requirements for buildings and structures
These building norms establish general fire safety requirements for buildings and structures of any purpose. The primary objectives are to:
- Limit the spread of fire between buildings.
- Limit the spread of fire within buildings.
- Ensure the safe evacuation of people.
- Ensure effective firefighting and rescue operations during a fire.
- Implement fire protection systems.
Calculate traffic flows for urban networks
Traffic flow calculations for the city's main network are handled based on population size:
- Cities > 100,000 people: Use comprehensive transport schemes. If unavailable, use separate calculations based on correspondences defined in the general plan.
- Cities < 100,000 people: Use separate calculations considering the development of main networks in the general plan, existing indicators, and trends in urban and external flows.
Methodology:
- Use the "mutual correspondences" method with predictive transport models.
- Perform separate calculations for passenger movement (splitting public and private transport) and freight transport (categorized by cargo generation and absorption characteristics).
- For specific sections, nodes, and public transport capacity assessments, use simulation transport models to establish correspondence matrices and identify peak loads and directional unevenness.
