What's inside Manifold
- Reading Groups allow users to build curated collections of content (such as course readers) from Projects, Journals, or any Text on a Manifold instance. They enable a cohort of readers to collectively annotate, highlight, and comment on content, making them ideal for classroom settings and peer-review workflows. Anyone with a Reader account can create groups, invite members, and manage group content.
Overview of Word document ingestion workflow in Manifold
Manifold converts ingested source formats (EPUB, HTML, Markdown, DOCX, Google Doc) into HTML. To maintain specific formatting and structure from a Word document during ingestion, a three-step process is required:
- Apply paragraph and character styles within the Word document.
- Map those Word styles to HTML attributes (styles) in the Manifold backend.
- Use CSS in Manifold to define how those HTML attributes render in the browser.
Note: This specific style-mapping strategy does not apply to Google Docs, as there is currently no way to map styles from Google into Manifold.
Overview of Manifold Reading Groups
Reading Groups are cohorts of readers who collectively engage with projects, texts, text sections, and resources on a customizable landing page. They allow users to collaboratively annotate and engage with materials. Any user with an account can create a Reading Group and invite others via the frontend interface.Overview of the Manifold publishing platform
Manifold is an open-source, web-based publishing platform designed for networked and enhanced digital projects that integrate into existing publication workflows. It supports a wide variety of publication types, including longform scholarship, interactive projects, textbooks, pamphlets, journals, open educational resources (OER), and audio/visual projects. The platform is free to install for users seeking a self-hosted (do-it-yourself) publishing solution, and professional support services are available through the Manifold team.Overview of Project Collections in Manifold
Project Collections group Projects into named containers on an instance's homepage, overriding the default 'Our Projects' library view. Each collection has its own landing page and is listed on a general Collections page. Access these via the Manifold backend by selecting Projects > Project Collections. Users with Admin, Editor, or Marketeer roles can create and modify these collections.Individual Collection: https://{domain-name}/projects/project-collection/{collection-slug} All Collections: https://{domain-name}/projects/project-collectionsOverview of the Manifold publishing platform
Manifold is an open-source, collaborative publishing platform designed for scholars. It provides a mobile-ready interface for reading and responding to texts. The platform allows presses or organizations to install the software and upload their own texts to enable interactive reading and annotation for their audience.Overview of Manifold Manifest Ingest
A Manifest Ingest allows you to create a single, cohesive Text from a collection of independent files and assets. This is particularly useful for long texts that need to be partitioned into smaller, digestible sections (chapters) to improve load times and reader navigation, as the Manifold Reader is a single-scroll experience.Overview of Resource Collections
Resource Collections are manually curated groupings of Resources within a Manifold project. They serve three primary purposes:
- They can be configured to appear in the Resources Content Block on a Project's landing page.
- They can be placed as annotations on Texts within the Reader.
- They are assigned their own dedicated library page within the project.
Overview of the Manifold publishing platform
Manifold is an open-source publishing platform designed for interactive scholarly monographs. It allows university presses and scholars to create responsive web publications that support reading, annotating, highlighting, and social media sharing. The platform features a project homepage for each book that aggregates activity, showcases project evolution, and manages resources (images, videos, files, PDFs).Understand Manifold email verification requirements
Starting with v8.1, Manifold requires both new and existing users to verify their email addresses. Unverified users are restricted to private annotations and private reading groups; they cannot leave public annotations, comment publicly, or create public reading groups until their email is confirmed.Understand how Word styles map to Manifold HTML
Manifold converts Word styles into HTML elements. Manual formatting overrides in Word (such as alignment, indentation, or font size) are ignored during conversion; only the assigned style is preserved. For example, a paragraph with the 'Normal' style is mapped to a standard<p>tag. This structural approach allows developers and admins to use CSS stylesheets in Manifold to control the visual rendering of content based on its HTML tag or class, rather than relying on Word's visual formatting.Ingest MS Word documents with the Mammoth engine
Manifold v6 replaced the Pandoc-based Word ingestion engine with Mammoth. This change allows for direct mapping of Word styles to HTML selectors, enabling more robust text production workflows.
