What's inside MenuPro

  1. Overview of MenuPro core concepts

MenuPro is a menu creator that separates content from design using two primary mechanisms:

    1. Food Item Database: Food items are stored in a persistent list. Users create menus by dragging items from this list onto the menu layout, allowing content to be updated without altering the design and vice versa.
    2. Menu Styles: These are design blueprints that control the layout and elements of the menu. Menu Styles are size-agnostic, allowing for any page size, and are interchangeable, meaning users can swap designs with one click while preserving the actual menu text.
  2. Recover MenuPro food items from a non-MenuPro backup

If you have a general hard drive image or backup from third-party software (rather than the internal MenuPro backup command), you can recover your food items by manually restoring the MenuProFoodItems.db file. This applies to MenuPro versions 8, 9, and 10.

    Steps to recover:

    1. Locate MenuProFoodItems.db in your backup image. This file is stored in a hidden AppData folder.
    2. Copy the file from the backup.
    3. Exit MenuPro on the target PC.
    4. Paste the recovered file into the appropriate AppData directory (see paths below).
    5. Restart MenuPro.

Important: Any menus created using the restored food item file must be opened after the restoration is complete to avoid missing items.

    Database Locations by OS:

    • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\SoftCafe\MenuPro
    • Windows Vista, 7, 8, and higher: C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\SoftCafe\MenuPro

Note: These are hidden folders. You must enable "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" in Windows Folder Options to see them. For MenuPro 10 users, you can view the current database location by pressing Ctrl-Shift-D while the program is running.

  3. Create a Menu Cover Page or Flyer

To create a standalone cover or flyer:

    1. Create a new blank menu via File > New Menu.
    2. Set dimensions using File > Page Setup.
    3. Add imagery via Insert > Picture.
    4. Add text using Insert > Floating Text (this allows free positioning, custom fonts, and colors).
    5. Optionally add a border via Design > Border.
    6. Save the file using File > Save Menu As.

To add a blank cover page to an existing menu:

    1. Enable Auto-blank first 'new page/column' heading in File > MenuPro Options.
    2. Edit a heading and check New Page or Column. MenuPro will insert a blank page 1, moving that heading to page 2, allowing you to place logos/floating text on the first page.
  4. Install MenuPro on a second computer

To install MenuPro on a second PC, you can either use the original download link sent via email or copy the Product Setup file from the original computer to a USB flash drive and run the installer on the new machine. If the setup file was not saved during the initial download, it can be downloaded again by selecting 'Save' during the process.
  5. Migrate from desktop MenuPro to iMenuPro

Active support for desktop MenuPro ended on July 1, 2022. Users are encouraged to switch to iMenuPro (available at https://imenupro.com) for continued compatibility and support. iMenuPro allows for the import of all existing food items from the desktop version and adds features such as live-sync menus, QR menus, and support for Apple Macs.
  6. Create multi-page menus

Multi-page menus can be created using two methods:

    1. Automatic Overflow: Continue dragging headings and food items onto page 1. Once the page is full, MenuPro automatically creates page 2 and spills the remaining items onto it.
    2. Manual Page Break: Double-click a Menu Heading and check the New Page or Column box under Layout Options. This forces that heading and all subsequent items to start on a new page (provided the global column setting is 1).

Navigation between pages is handled via the Page Buttons located on the bottom status bar.

  7. Increase page capacity by adjusting margins

To fit more items on a single page and prevent items from spilling over to the next page, decrease the top and bottom margins. MenuPro defaults to generous margins for borders and headers, but these can be reduced if not needed.
Navigate to File > Page Setup and set the bottom and top margins to 0.5 or less, or select Narrow from the Quick Margin setup choices.
  8. Migrate MenuPro data between PCs (Versions 8 through 10)

To transfer menus and food items between computers for MenuPro versions 8, 9, and 10, use the built-in Backup and Restore functions via a USB flash drive.

Step 1: Backup on Original PC

    1. Create a folder (e.g., 'MenuPro Data') on a USB flash drive.
    2. Open MenuPro and go to File > Back Up.
    3. Select the USB folder as the Backup location and click OK.

Caveat: Only food items and menus in the Default Menu Folder are backed up. To check or change the default folder, go to File > MenuPro Options. Move any menus outside this folder into the default folder before backing up.

Step 2: Restore on New PC

    1. Install and activate MenuPro on the new PC.
    2. Open MenuPro and go to File > Restore.
    3. Select the USB backup folder as the Restore from Backup Location and click OK.

Note on Activation: If you have no activation uses remaining, you must first deactivate the software on the old computer via Help > Deactivate MenuPro before activating on the new one.

  9. Resolve 'Error Reading Setup Initialization File' during installation

The 'Error Reading Setup Initialization File' message typically indicates an incomplete or unsuccessful download of the installer package, even if the browser did not report a download error.
    Resolution:
    1. Re-download the product, ensuring you select 'Save' to your computer.
    2. Wait for the download to complete fully before running the setup file.
    3. If the error persists, clear your browser cache (Temporary Internet Files) to ensure a fresh download.
    4. Try an alternative browser (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, or Internet Explorer).
  10. Align images in MenuPro

Use the Tools > Align Pictures menu option to align images to specific locations on the page, such as the center of the page, the left margin, or a custom user-selected point.
  11. Sort food items by their menu order

To quickly edit items currently active on a menu, you can sort the food item list so that items appearing on the menu are moved to the top.
Click in the gray bar to the left of the Food Item column header.
