https://docs.weatherxm.com/Technical guides and documentation for the WeatherXM ecosystem, including assembly, installation, and maintenance for devices such as the Pulse, M5, and D1 weather stations, and the WG1000 and WG3000 gateways. Includes information on frequency plans, data quality mechanisms (OBC and SQC), tokenomics, and mobile app usage.
What's inside WeatherXM
- The Data Quality algorithm evaluates the quality of weather data provided by stations to determine a confidence score (a rational number between 0 and 1). This score is used to quantify the usability of the data and encourage station owners to follow network guidelines. The algorithm consists of three primary control points: Self Check, Reference Check, and Deployment Status.
Introduction to the WeatherXM Project
WeatherXM is a community-powered weather network that rewards station owners for deploying and maintaining autonomous, all-in-one weather stations. The project aims to create a new weather data economy and enable the use of weather-related smart contracts on-chain by providing accurate weather services to Web3 enterprises.Overview of the WeatherXM Network
WeatherXM is a decentralized weather network where community members deploy and maintain weather stations to contribute to a global weather data economy. The network is EVM compatible and deployed on Arbitrum One. Participants are rewarded with the WXM token for their contributions. Network status can be monitored via the official explorer at https://explorer.weatherxm.com.Overview of WeatherXM Pro Hyperlocal Weather Data
WeatherXM Pro provides access to a global network of weather stations offering real-time and historical weather data, as well as hyperlocal forecasts. Key capabilities include:
- Historical & Real-Time Data: Access ground-truth weather data from any WeatherXM station globally for immediate insights or long-term analysis.
- Forecast Accuracy Tracking: Compare the performance of over 40 global weather models to determine which is most accurate for a specific location, useful for precision agriculture (irrigation/harvesting) and energy load forecasting.
- Hyperlocal Station Forecasts: Forecasts are improved using real-world data from local stations. Data reliability is maintained via a Quality of Data (QoD) mechanism that rewards station owners for device maintenance.
Users can access this data via the web interface at pro.weatherxm.com or through the developer API.
Overview of WeatherXM Reward Mechanism v2.0
The Reward Mechanism v2.0 is the current system for distributing $WXM rewards to weather station owners. It improves upon previous versions by introducing Business Boost rewards and a Merkle Tree structure for transparent, verifiable reward distribution. Instead of automatic daily transfers, rewards are allocated to a smart contract, and users must initiate a withdrawal.Overview of the Indoors Station Detector (ISD)
The Indoors Station Detector (ISD) is a component of the Quality of Data (QoD) mechanism used to score the quality of weather data and station deployment. It is a 'Self Check' process, meaning it relies exclusively on data from the weather station itself rather than third-party sources.
While primarily designed to identify stations deployed indoors (houses, boxes, closets), it also detects stations in enclosed areas (balconies), locations with significant obstacles, or those on tilted poles. The ISD primarily relies on solar irradiance data; without sufficient solar irradiance data, the ISD cannot determine a station's deployment status. It also analyzes variances in wind, temperature, and relative humidity (RH) to reach a final decision. Note that atmospheric pressure measurements are considered valid even if a station is categorized as indoors.
Overview of WeatherXM hardware bundles
WeatherXM provides several all-in-one weather station bundles designed for deploying weather data miners and supporting Web3 technologies. Available hardware options include:
- M5 bundle (WB1000): A developer-friendly local weather data miner.
- Helium station (WS2000): A station compatible with the Helium network that submits data to WeatherXM.
- D1 bundle (WB1200): Combines the WS1001 weather station with the open-source WeatherXM WG1200 Gateway.
- Pulse bundle (WB3000): Combines the WS1001 weather station with the WG3000 Gateway, which utilizes 4G-LTE connectivity.
Understand WeatherXM data quality mechanisms
WeatherXM employs three complementary data quality mechanisms to ensure station data is reliable for internal use, third-party products, and weather forecast improvements. These mechanisms also influence user rewards and motivate users to optimize their station deployments.
The three mechanisms are:
- Out-of-Bounds Check (OBC) and Self Quality Check (SQC): Detects suspicious raw data points at the minute and hourly level.
- Indoors Station Detector (ISD): Identifies stations that are active but placed indoors or in other problematic deployment statuses.
- Station Photo Verification (SPV): A verification process for station deployment.
Understand WeatherXM's Constancy Analysis for Data Quality
As part of the Self-Quality-Check (SQC) within the Quality of Data (QoD) mechanism, WeatherXM identifies 'suspicious' data where parameters remain unchanging for extended durations. While WMO guidelines generally flag constant temperature, relative humidity (RH), wind, and pressure data as suspicious if they remain constant for longer than one hour, WeatherXM uses specific thresholds based on empirical analysis of well-deployed stations to avoid flagging legitimate meteorological conditions.Understand the Outdoor Weather Station components
The outdoor sensor collects local temperature, humidity, rain, wind speed, and wind direction, then transmits this data wirelessly to the weather miner.
Key Components:
- Wind Speed Sensor & Wind Vane
- Thermo-hygro sensor
- Rain collector
- Bubble level (for installation alignment)
- Solar panel & Light sensor
- Antenna
- Battery compartment
- Reset button
- LED Indicator: Stays on for 4 seconds during power-up, then flashes once every 16 seconds to indicate the sensor transmission update period.
Understand the $WXM token and its utility
$WXM is an ERC20 token issued by the WeatherXM Network Association that powers the weather data economy. It serves two primary purposes: governing the Network and licensing weather data for commercial use. Station owners earn $WXM by providing high-quality weather data to the Network.WeatherXM Data Quality and Pro Services
WeatherXM employs two primary systems for data utility and professional access:
- Data Quality Algorithm: An automated system that assesses the quality of incoming weather data to ensure it is meaningful and usable. It generates a score based on expected vs. unexpected data behaviors to encourage owners to follow installation guidelines.
- WeatherXM Pro: A premium service providing developers and businesses with enhanced access to hyperlocal weather data, advanced analytics, and integration-ready tools.
