What's inside Thinkwise

  1. Overview of Data Model components

The data model consists of several structural elements used to design application data structures:

    • Tables: Contain columns and rows (records). They are the primary physical storage units.
    • Views: Provide a runtime presentation of data from one or more tables. Views are always up-to-date and do not store rows themselves.
    • Snapshots (DB2/Oracle): Similar to views but physically save the combined data from one or more tables to improve performance. These can be refreshed manually or automatically by the RDBMS.
    • References: Relations between a source table (lookup table) and a target table. Integrity is automatically guaranteed via column comparison.
    • Function-typed tables: Read-only tables that use a table-valued function as a data source to improve performance by filtering data via parameters before retrieval.
  2. Overview of Thinkwise 3-tier architecture transition

Thinkwise is transitioning from a 2-tier architecture to a 3-tier architecture. In the 3-tier model, the Universal UI (a responsive PWA) communicates with the database via Indicium, a Web API service tier. This shift improves security, scalability, and maintainability by removing business logic from the UI and providing automatic APIs for application integration. Version 2025.3 is the final version that supports running both 2-tier and 3-tier architectures in parallel to facilitate a smooth migration.
  3. Overview of Thinkwise Intelligent Application Manager (IAM)

The Thinkwise Intelligent Application Manager (IAM) is used to manage authorization, analysis, and user preferences for applications developed by the Thinkwise Software Factory. It allows administrators to create users and user groups manually or import them from Active Directory. User groups are assigned to roles (created in the Software Factory) which define the specific rights required for tasks. Additionally, IAM enables the definition of user and group preferences, including themes, menus, and prefilters. The Thinkwise Platform runtime components use the IAM model, authorization settings, and preferences to generate a personalized application experience for each user.
  4. Overview of generative AI capabilities in Thinkwise Platform

The Thinkwise Platform integrates generative AI to support specific tasks and enrichments across different tools. Key use cases include:

    • Software Factory: AI-powered code reviews and model enrichments.
    • Upcycler: AI-powered enrichments and tasks.

Depending on the goal, AI providers are configured in different locations:

    1. For Platform Tools (Software Factory/Upcycler): Configured in IAM.
    2. For Model or Branch features: Configured as a provider for a branch in the Software Factory (serves as the default).
    3. For Development/Testing: Overridden in Runtime configurations (Maintenance > Runtime configurations > Generative AI provider).
    4. For Specific Applications: Overridden in IAM (Authorization > Applications > General settings > Generative AI providers).
  5. Overview of Thinkwise Software Factory validations

Validations in the Software Factory are used to check the model for errors based on pre-defined rules in a base model (e.g., ensuring primary keys are at the top of a table). Users can also create company or product-specific validations. Validations are accessible via a 'Validations' tab in every development step, allowing for application validation before synchronization to IAM or deployment.
  6. Overview of the Thinkwise Reporting Service

The Thinkwise Reporting Service is a downloadable solution from the Thinkstore that automates the printing and exporting of reports to file storage locations. It integrates with Thinkwise applications to manage reporting needs automatically.
  7. Overview of OpenID Connect in Thinkwise Platform

The Thinkwise Platform supports OpenID Connect (OIDC) for user authentication and Single Sign-On (SSO). It can operate in two roles:

    1. As an OpenID Client: The platform integrates with external identity providers (e.g., Microsoft, Google, GitHub, Facebook) to grant users access to Thinkwise applications.
    2. As an OpenID Provider: The platform allows external websites to authenticate accounts registered in Thinkwise IAM. This is configured via the Client Applications guide.
  8. Overview of load testing for Thinkwise web applications

Load tests simulate web environment usage by a group of users performing specific tasks using recorded scripts. This removes the need for real-life testers by sending requests to the web application similar to a browser.

    Goals of load testing include:

    • Simulating the intended number of users.
    • Determining the maximum possible number of users supported by current resources to predict growth.
    • Measuring performance and response times as load is increased incrementally.
  9. Overview of the Thinkwise Platform components

The Thinkwise Platform is composed of four primary components used to develop and deploy end products:

    • Software Factory (SF): The primary development environment used to create the application model. It allows for the rapid creation of working prototypes without writing code during the initial modeling phase.
    • Intelligent Application Manager (IAM): Used by application administrators to manage models in production, test, or acceptance environments, as well as to configure user preferences and authorizations.
    • Indicium Application Tier: A generic service tier that interprets the application model to provide the necessary business logic and functionality.
    • Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs): The presentation layer for end users. This includes the Universal GUI (a responsive Progressive Web App for mobile and desktop) and the Windows GUI.
  10. Overview of Thinkwise Cloud PaaS

The Thinkwise Cloud is a managed Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) designed for the complete software development lifecycle of applications built with the Thinkwise Platform. It provides a secure, scalable, and automated environment for developing, testing, deploying, and maintaining applications, removing the need for the customer to manage infrastructure. Key service levels include a 99.9% uptime, a 1-minute Recovery Point Objective (RPO) for the last 35 days, a 4-hour Recovery Time Objective (RTO), and 10-year backup retention.
  11. Overview of Dynamic Modeling in Software Factory

Dynamic Modeling allows developers to expand the application model using SQL queries executed during the build process, rather than creating elements manually via the user interface. This ensures uniformity and high productivity, especially for large applications. It is primarily used to add functionality across multiple model areas, extend the data model (e.g., adding timestamp columns to all tables), or adjust the user interface.

Constraints: Dynamic modeling is not intended for use on program objects or user requirements.
