What's inside Insight ATMS

  1. Overview of the ATMS Progressive Web Application (PWA)

The ATMS Progressive Web Application (PWA) is designed for remote and field users to access and update ATMS details via desktop or mobile devices over the internet. Key capabilities include:

    • Incident and Planned Event Management: Create and manage Planned events for Construction and Maintenance.
    • Roadwork and Diversions: Filter construction events and add roadwork or diversions.
    • Project Management: Create Projects or Construction Projects, assign contacts, and schedule them with specific location details.
    • Map Visualization: View all created events directly on a map.
  2. Overview of HAR Transmitter Message Priority

The ATMS manages a message queue for each HAR transmitter. The playlist sent to the transmitter is determined by the priority of the messages in the queue:

    • Introduction: Always included at the beginning of the playlist (e.g., station identification).
    • High Priority: Always included in the playlist. If high priority messages exist, only they and the Introduction messages are sent, unless a low priority message is explicitly set to 'Play Always'.
    • Low Priority: Included only if no high priority messages are in the queue, or if the user selects the Play Always option.

In the Transmitter view, messages currently included in the active playlist are indicated by an audio/sound icon in the 'Playing' column.

  3. Overview of the Additional Info tab for Incidents

The Additional Info tab is used to record supplementary information about an event, such as responder vehicles, road or weather conditions, and vehicles involved. This tab is exclusively available for Incidents and can be accessed from the Event Details window, adjacent to the Primary Details tab.
  4. Overview of inSIGHT Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) capabilities

The inSIGHT ATMS provides a unified interface for managing roadway networks through four primary functional areas:

    1. Traffic Impacting Event Management: Recording and monitoring incidents, congestion, planned closures, and weather events. It supports broadcasting info via Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) and Highway Advisory Radio (HAR), notifying stakeholders via email/SMS, and publishing data to external traveler information websites.
    2. Traffic Monitoring: Collecting and displaying traffic speed data, identifying potential events based on conditions or external sources (e.g., WAZE), and providing access to CCTV camera streams.
    3. Device Management: Monitoring field equipment status, and posting or scheduling messages for DMS and HAR Transmitters.
    4. Information Dissemination: Displaying current travel times on DMS and broadcasting travel times, device statuses, and messages via the ATMS API.
  5. Overview of ATMS Response Plan Configuration

Response plans in ATMS are generated using a hierarchy of configurable rules, templates, and parameters. They are categorized into two types:

    1. Broadcast: Text sent via email, Highway Advisory Radio (HAR), and the ATMS API.
    2. DMS (Dynamic Message Signs): Messages displayed on physical signs.

    Core Components:

    • Response Rules: Define the event properties that must match for a rule to trigger and specify the associated Message Type. DMS rules also specify the sign's position relative to the event.
    • Response Templates: Define the fixed and variable text for a Message Type. For DMS, templates are prioritized by sequence number; if a high-priority template fails (e.g., message too long for the sign), the system attempts the next template in the sequence.
    • Response Parameters: Define the values used by rules for comparisons (e.g., minimum/maximum distance a device must be from an event to be included in a response plan).
  6. Overview of the ATMS Smart Corridor Dashboard

The Smart Corridor Dashboard is a specialized interface in ATMS used to manage 'Flex Lanes' (part-time shoulder lanes). It allows TMC operators to improve travel time reliability by opening and closing shoulder lanes based on traffic speeds and volumes. The dashboard integrates ITS field components and provides a primary interface to monitor traffic conditions, receive shoulder recommendations, and control devices.
  7. Overview of ATMS Alerts

Alerts in ATMS are used to manage responses to events across specific areas. They are represented by an icon on the action panel. There are two primary types of alerts: General Alerts and Missing Person Alerts (used for Amber, Silver, and Green alerts).
  8. Overview of ATMS Event Response Plans

An ATMS Response Plan is a set of suggested messages and actions used to notify the public and responders about events. Plans are generated based on configured rules and templates whenever events are added, updated, or cleared.

    Supported dissemination mediums include:

    • ITS Assets: DMS, HAR, and HAR beacons/flashers.
    • Electronic: Email, SMS, and REST API.
    • Manual: Phone or radio contact lists.

    Accessing Plans:

    • Unplanned Events: Accessed via the 'Response' tab in Event Details.
    • Planned/Forecast Weather Events: Accessed via 'Advance Plan' and 'Active Plan' tabs in Event Details.
  9. Access and manage the Diversion Plan list

To access the Diversion Plan list in the ATMS, hover over the configuration icon in the navigation menu and select Diversion Plans. The list provides an overview of all existing diversion plans, including Display ID, Public ID, Plan Name, Start/End Roads, Start/End Exits, and the last update timestamp/user. From this list, users can either Edit the configuration settings or Delete a diversion route.
  10. Retrieve traffic and ITS data using the ATMS API

The ATMS API allows external systems to retrieve real-time information regarding current traffic conditions, active and planned events, and ITS inventory status. Every deployment includes a Swagger endpoint that can be used for API exploration and testing.
