Official documentation for Gestaltor, a visual editor for the glTF file format. It provides a visual interface for editing glTF files, allowing users to view and edit 3D models directly. Features include Draco mesh compression, ambient occlusion and thickness baking, material variants via KHR_materials_variants, and support for various glTF extensions.

What's inside Gestaltor

  1. Overview of Gestaltor Visual glTF Editor

Gestaltor is a visual interface for editing glTF files, allowing developers and artists to view and modify 3D models directly without writing code. It includes built-in tools for model optimization, composition, and validation to ensure glTF files are correctly structured and performant.
  2. Overview of Material Variants in Gestaltor

Material Variants are implemented via the glTF extension KHR_materials_variants, allowing a single glTF file to define multiple materials that can be alternatively applied to a primitive. A material variant is selected using a string-based variant key. If no material variant is found for a specific key, the system falls back to the primitive's default material.
  3. Use Gestaltor glTF operations via C++ and Python APIs

In Gestaltor 2.0, the glTF operations and data model have been split into separate modules. This allows the core functionality—modifying glTF files without violating the specification—to be used independently of the graphical user interface. These modules are accessible via both a C++ API and a Python API for application integration and scripting automation.
  4. Generate glTF information using the Statistics widget

The Statistics widget provides technical information about the current glTF. It is hidden by default and can be enabled via the 'View' menu in the menu bar.
  5. Compress 3D meshes using Draco

Draco is used to compress and decompress 3D geometric meshes and point clouds to improve storage and transmission size. In Gestaltor, you can compress meshes by selecting them in the Resources panel, right-clicking, and choosing the Draco Compression option. Multiple meshes can be selected using the Command or Control key. Note: Changing compression settings from defaults may result in broken geometry.
  6. Replace a material globally across a glTF model

To replace a material globally, use the Resources panel. This method updates all primitives and material variants using the specified material and removes the original material from the glTF file.

    Steps:

    1. Right-click the material to be replaced in the Resources panel.
    2. Select Replace with ... from the context menu.
    3. Choose the replacement material from the dropdown menu.
  7. Remove unused resources and cleanup glTF files

To minimize glTF file size, remove all unreferenced resources. First, manually audit the hierarchy and viewport to delete unused Scenes, Animations, and Nodes. Once manual removal is complete, run the automated cleanup tool via Automation -> Cleanup All. The cleanup operation only removes resources that are not referenced in any glTF scenes.
  8. Manage Gestaltor 2.0 licenses and subscriptions

Gestaltor 2.0 has replaced its WooCommerce-based shop and license management system with Paddle and Keygen to improve the ordering process and subscription management. Existing licenses from Gestaltor 1.0 cannot be automatically transferred; users must contact support at support@ux3d.io to migrate their licenses to the new system.
  9. Configure cloth and velvet materials using KHR_materials_sheen

The KHR_materials_sheen extension is used for cloth-like materials. Roughness controls the size of the effect (fiber length): low roughness for silk/velour and high roughness for terrycloth. The color factor is typically set close to the base color.

    Material Recipes:

    • Velvet-like: Set the base color (SheenColorFactor in glTF) to black or a dark color. Set chromaticity information on the sheen color (SpecularFactor in KHR_materials_specular).
    • Common Fabrics (Denim, Cotton): Use the base color (SheenColorFactor in glTF) for chromaticity. Set the sheen color (SpecularFactor in KHR_materials_specular) to the luminance of the base color or use the default.
  10. Migrate Gestaltor 1.0 licenses to Gestaltor 2.0

Gestaltor 2.0 has replaced its WooCommerce-based shop and license management system with Paddle and Keygen. Because existing licenses from Gestaltor 1.0 cannot be transferred automatically to the new system, users must contact support to migrate their licenses.
  11. Manage Gestaltor 2.0 licenses and subscriptions

Gestaltor 2.0 has replaced its WooCommerce-based shop and license management with a new system powered by Paddle and Keygen. This change provides a smoother ordering process and more flexible license models. If you have an existing license from Gestaltor 1.0 that needs to be transferred to the new system, contact support at support@ux3d.io.
  12. Verify system requirements for Gestaltor installation

Gestaltor is supported on Windows, macOS, and Linux. All platforms generally require a dedicated GPU with OpenGL 4.1 support, with the exception of macOS M-series chipsets which are also supported.

    Platform Requirements:

    • Windows: Windows 10 or higher.
    • macOS: macOS 10.15 or higher.
    • Linux: Ubuntu 20.04 is officially supported. Because Gestaltor is distributed as an AppImage, it is compatible with most other Linux distributions.
