https://docs.etherlink.comEtherlink is a non-custodial execution layer for Tezos powered by Tezos Smart Rollup. It features an EVM Interface as a drop-in replacement for Ethereum VM contracts and a Michelson Interface, supporting Native Atomic Composability (NAC) for cross-interface calls. The platform provides tools for deploying smart contracts, managing accounts and aliases, and bridging assets between Tezos Mainnet and Etherlink Mainnet.
What's inside Etherlink
- The Michelson Interface is a runtime on Etherlink designed to behave similarly to Tezos Layer 1. This allows Tezos developers to deploy and execute existing smart contracts on Etherlink with minimal modifications. It supports standard Tezos operations, including transfers, contract originations, and reveals, as well as FA1.2 and FA2 token standards.
Overview of the Etherlink EVM Interface
The EVM Interface is an EVM runtime designed as a drop-in replacement for Ethereum-compatible chains. It allows existing Solidity contracts, wallets, SDKs, and tooling to work without modification. While it targets full compatibility with the Ethereum ecosystem, some specific differences exist regarding development and compatibility.Overview of Native Atomic Composability (NAC) on Etherlink
Etherlink is a single blockchain featuring both an EVM interface (for Solidity) and a Michelson interface (for Michelson contracts). Native Atomic Composability (NAC) allows a contract on one interface to call a contract on the other within the same transaction. This ensures full atomicity: if any step in the cross-interface call fails, all effects on both interfaces are rolled back.Overview of Etherlink architecture and capabilities
Etherlink is a non-custodial execution layer for Tezos powered by Tezos Smart Rollup technology. It functions as a single blockchain accessible through two distinct interfaces: an EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) interface and a Michelson interface. This allows for seamless integration with both Ethereum and Tezos tools, wallets, and indexers, and supports asset transfers between EVM-compatible chains and the Tezos L1 Mainnet.Select the appropriate Smart Rollup node mode for Etherlink
To participate in Etherlink and ensure network security, run a Smart Rollup node in a mode that posts commitments about Etherlink's state to Layer 1. These commitments validate that blocks and transactions are processed honestly according to the kernel.
Available modes for participation include:
- Operator Mode: Posts commitments and handles batching operations (required for sequencer nodes).
- Maintenance Mode: Posts commitments but does not require batching operation settings. This is a recommended path for nodes that need to validate state without acting as a sequencer.
- Observer Mode: Used for initial setup and verification before converting to a commitment-posting mode.
Recommended workflow: Start the node in observer mode to verify functionality, then convert it to maintenance mode to begin posting commitments.
Understand how the Etherlink EVM wrapped asset bridge works
The Etherlink EVM bridge utilizes a wrapped asset bridge created by LayerZero. It operates by maintaining liquidity pools on source networks and minting equivalent tokens on the Etherlink EVM.
Bridging Process:
- Inbound (Other Network $\rightarrow$ Etherlink EVM): Bridge contracts lock tokens in a liquidity pool on the source network, send a message via LayerZero to Etherlink EVM, and mint equivalent tokens on Etherlink EVM.
- Outbound (Etherlink EVM $\rightarrow$ Other Network): Bridge contracts burn the tokens on Etherlink EVM and unlock the corresponding tokens from the liquidity pool on the target network.
Key Constraints & Infrastructure:
- Liquidity Dependency: Bridging tokens out of Etherlink EVM is dependent on the available liquidity in the target chain's pool.
- Verification: LayerZero maintains EVM nodes to verify that transactions are completed on Etherlink EVM, trusting only the layer-1-final state.
Index Etherlink smart contract data with The Graph
The Graph can be used to query smart contract data via subgraphs, providing a decentralized way to index historical data for dApps. Both Etherlink Mainnet and Shadownet Testnet are supported by The Graph.Understand the FA token bridging contract architecture
Bridging FA tokens between Tezos Layer 1 and Etherlink EVM follows the TZIP-029 standard. The process converts tokens into tickets to facilitate transfer between the two environments. Each FA token requires its own set of the following three contracts to enable bridging:
- Ticketer contract: Responsible for storing tokens and issuing the tickets that represent them.
- Token bridge helper contract: Handles bridge requests on Layer 1, interacts with the Ticketer contract to obtain tickets, and transmits those tickets to the Etherlink EVM.
- ERC-20 proxy contract: Operates on the EVM side to store tickets and mint equivalent ERC-20 tokens representing the original FA tokens from Layer 1.
Integrate Etherlink using the Sequence web3 platform
Sequence is a web3 integration platform for game developers that provides plug-and-play tools for blockchain implementation. It supports both Etherlink Mainnet and Shadownet Testnet. Key capabilities include SDKs for Unity, Unreal, and mobile, fiat-crypto onramps, NFT checkout, smart contract wallets, and marketplace building tools.Explore Etherlink reference dApp examples
Etherlink provides a collection of complete, runnable dApp examples located at https://docs.etherlink.com/examples. Unlike tutorials, these are reference implementations designed to be read, forked, and run to see how various Etherlink features work together in a realistic context.Understand Michelson Interface compatibility with Tezos L1
The Michelson Interface on Etherlink is designed to behave as closely as possible to Tezos Layer 1. Most features work identically; for these aspects, developers can refer to the official Tezos documentation. However, there are specific differences regarding fees, account types, and governance that are unique to the Etherlink L2 environment.Understand the security model of the Etherlink Bridge
The bridge between EVM and Michelson environments relies on two primary security layers: decentralized smart contracts from LayerZero deployed on supported EVM networks (eliminating third-party intervention), and the EVM node and sequencer operators responsible for securing the Etherlink network.
