https://docs.autonomys.xyz/Technical documentation for the Autonomys Network, covering node configuration, farming methods, staking portals, and network architecture. Includes guides on CLI installation, domain nodes, timekeeping, and bridging tokens between Auto EVM and external blockchains, as well as wallet setup for Talisman and Polkadot.js.
What's inside Autonomys
- Cross Domain Messaging (XDM) is a core feature of the Autonomys Network that enables secure communication and the exchange of assets, messages, and data between independent blockchain domains, such as the consensus chain and specialized domains like Auto EVM.
Overview of Autonomys Network participant roles
The Autonomys Network is a layer-zero protocol using Proof-of-Archival-Storage consensus. It defines four primary participant roles:
- Farmers: Secure the network by storing archival history, plotting data to disk, and participating in the Distributed Storage Network (DSN) to earn rewards.
- Nominators: Stake tAI3 tokens by nominating operators to increase their chances of being elected as slot leaders, earning proportional rewards.
- Operators: Validate and execute transactions, produce execution receipts, and apply state transitions across domains.
- Timekeepers: Run the Proof-of-Time chain and maintain the randomness beacon that secures the consensus chain.
Overview of Space Acres farming application
Space Acres is the recommended GUI application for getting started with the Autonomys Network. It combines the node and farmer into a single application, providing a visual wizard for setup and a dashboard for real-time monitoring of farming progress and rewards. It is designed for beginners and users seeking a streamlined experience. For advanced users requiring multiple farms, farming clusters, or specialized configurations, the CLI is recommended instead.Overview of Autonomys Network capabilities
Autonomys Network is a blockchain designed to balance scalability, security, and decentralization using an innovative storage-based consensus mechanism. Its core value propositions include:
- Eco-Friendly: Sustainable approach to crypto mining.
- Resilient Decentralization: Architecture designed to eliminate central points of failure.
- Scalable Growth: Ability to expand capacity alongside the community without sacrificing security.
- Interconnected Experience: Designed for seamless integration across the Web3 ecosystem.
Overview of XDM (Cross Domain Messaging) transfers
XDM is the official bridge used to move AI3 tokens between the Autonomys consensus chain and the Auto EVM domain. Key constraints and behaviors include:
- Minimum Transfer: 1 AI3.
- Irreversibility: Transfers cannot be reversed; destination addresses must be verified.
- Fees: Users pay a network transaction fee on the source chain. XDM transactions are slightly more expensive than standard transfers as they cover execution on both chains.
- Gas Buffer: When using the 'MAX' button in the sender tool, a small amount of AI3 is kept back to cover gas fees.
Access Autonomys Academy for blockchain fundamentals
The Autonomys Academy provides a deep dive into the philosophy, architecture, and community of the Autonomys Network. It serves as the primary resource for learning the fundamentals of the platform.Hardware requirements for Autonomys farming
Autonomys requires SSD or NVMe drives to store farms. While farming itself is not CPU-intensive, the farm creation (plotting) process is resource-heavy. GPU plotting is optional but significantly faster than CPU plotting, reducing sector plotting time from approximately two minutes to under five seconds.Select the correct Autonomys CLI binary for your CPU
Autonomys provides different binary versions based on CPU architecture to optimize performance:
- Skylake: Optimized for Intel Skylake and newer CPUs, and AMD Ryzen processors (typically PCs from 2015 onward).
- Legacy (x86-64-v2): Designed for Intel Broadwell, Haswell, and older CPUs, as well as compatible AMD processors (typically systems from 2009 to 2015) and virtual environments lacking Skylake instructions.
- Aarch64: For ARM64 architecture, such as Raspberry Pi.
Binaries can be downloaded from the GitHub Releases section.
Compare Autonomys farming methods: Space Acres vs CLI
Autonomys offers two primary methods for farming. Space Acres is a multi-platform GUI application designed for beginners and standard setups, offering a visual setup wizard, real-time monitoring dashboard, and automatic updates. The CLI is designed for advanced users, supporting headless operation, automation/scripting, and large-scale farming clusters where components (node, controller, cache, plotter, farmer) are distributed across multiple servers. Key differences include: Space Acres is beginner-friendly with quick setup but does not support multiple farms; the CLI requires command-line knowledge and manual configuration but provides full multi-farm support and granular resource optimization.Understand the difference between AI3 and WAI3
On the Auto EVM chain, there are two versions of the AI3 token:
- Native AI3: The chain's native token (similar to ETH on Ethereum). It is used to pay for network gas and is not an ERC-20 token.
- WAI3 (Wrapped AI3): An ERC-20 compatible version of AI3. This version is required for interaction with smart contracts and DeFi protocols that expect a standard ERC-20 interface.
Both tokens maintain a 1:1 conversion ratio and use 18 decimals.
Understand the Decoupled Execution Framework (DecEx)
The Decoupled Execution Framework (DecEx) separates transaction ordering from execution to prevent state-bloat. In this model, Farmers confirm and order transactions, while staked Operator nodes execute them. Users submit transactions to operators who batch them into bundles; Farmers then verify and order these bundles. This process creates a deterministic receipt chain using an optimistic fraud-proof validation scheme.Understand Chronos Testnet specifications
Chronos is the permanent testnet for Autonomys (started October 2024). The primary differences between Chronos and the mainnet are the chain specification and the client software. For Chronos, the chain specification flag is--chain chronos. Note that only the CLI is supported on this network; Space Acres is not available.
