What's inside CAST

  1. Overview of the CAST AIP Automation Solution workflow

The AIP Automation Solution uses Jenkins to automate the CAST analysis process for individual applications. Each application is managed via its own Jenkins job consisting of eleven configurable tasks:

    1. Backup CAST Application Database Trio before ReScan
    2. Execute Batch Script
    3. Deliver Application Code
    4. Accept Delivery
    5. Perform the application analysis
    6. Generate the snapshot
    7. Validate the snapshot results
    8. Publish snapshot results to the Application Analysis Dashboard (AAD)
    9. Database Optimization
    10. Archive Delivery
    11. Backup CAST Application Database Trio after ReScan

Jobs can be triggered via Jenkins Scheduler, Windows-based Scheduler, the Jenkins web interface, or the CAST Application Operations Console (AOP). JAF requires a CAST AIP triplet that maintains only one application.

  2. Overview of Advanced Search in CAST Engineering and Security Dashboards

The Advanced Search feature (introduced in version 1.7.0) allows users to search for object names based on a list of violations. It includes filtering capabilities to limit the search scope. This feature is accessed via the icon in the left-hand menu of the CAST Engineering and CAST Security Dashboards.
  3. Overview of CAST Imaging System Data Call Graph mode

The Data Call Graph mode in the CAST Imaging System provides a visualization of the flow from Entry Points to End Points and Data Entities. This view is accessible via the APPLICATION LAYER drop-down menu located in the top-left of the interface; the number displayed in square brackets indicates the total number of available call graphs.
  4. Overview of CAST Server Manager capabilities

Server Manager is a CAST client application used to manage server-side components. Its primary capabilities include:

    • Installing, updating, reinstalling, and uninstalling CAST server-side components (e.g., Analysis Service).
    • Dropping databases or schemas hosting components during uninstallation.
    • Loading MetaModels from files into the Analysis Service.
    • Removing database locks created by CAST applications.
  5. Overview of Background Facts and Business Value Metrics

Background Facts and Business Value Metrics are external numerical data points uploaded to enrich CAST Health and Engineering Dashboards. They are not based on source code analysis but are cross-referenced with quality and quantity information.

    Key characteristics:

    • Scope: These metrics are attached to Modules. For an Application, the dashboard displays the sum total of all contained Modules.
    • Business Value Metric (ID 66061): A specific metric used in both Health and Engineering Dashboards. For Systems or Applications, the dashboard retrieves the maximum value of all contained Modules. Valid values for this metric are restricted to:
      • Low: 1 or 1.5
      • Moderate: 2 or 2.5
      • High: 3 or 3.5
      • Extreme: 4
    • Visibility: Data appears in manually created tiles (e.g., BackgroundFactsResults in Health Dashboard) and within the Assessment Model editor in CAST Management Studio.
  6. Overview of the CAST Transaction Configuration Center (TCC)

The CAST Transaction Configuration Center (TCC) is a tool used to calibrate the initial automatic count of OMG-compliant Automated Function Points (AFP) measured by the CAST Application Intelligence Platform. Because functional size measurement requires knowledge of the application's design intent, FP Experts and Consultants use TCC to refine the automatic count by removing technical/temporary objects, aggregating or splitting function points, and adjusting the types of Data or Transactional Functions.
  7. Overview of the Alert Ignore List Builder

The Alert Ignore List Builder automates the ignoring of DMT packaging alerts based on regular expressions stored in a property file. It specifically addresses the following alert types:

    • Missing Project
    • Missing Source File
    • Missing Library
    • Missing Source Folder

Critical Constraint: The tool only works on open versions. Do not deliver your version before running the tool.

    Components:

    • IgnorePackagingAlerts.cgroovy: The main Groovy script component.
    • AlertsConfig.properties: The configuration file for regular expressions.
    • CAST-AIPVersionsCollector.jar and generateBatch.bat: Tools used to generate multi-application batch files.

    Compatibility:

    • CAST Version: 8.3.x
    • RDBMS: CSS2, CSS3
    • Extension ID: com.castsoftware.labs.tools.alertignorelistbuilder
  8. Overview of the Reference Finder feature

The Reference Finder allows developers to define rules at the Application level to search for links (words, series of words, or strings) between Source and Target code using Regular Expressions. It is an extension of the Dependencies feature and is specifically used when standard word-based matches are too broad (creating false positives) or fail to detect required links.

Key characteristics of Reference Finder links:

    • They are treated as dynamic links and appear in the 'Summary of Dynamic Links' for validation.
    • They do not include bookmarks in the parent file to identify the exact location of the link.
    • If an application was imported from CAST Management Studio, existing Reference Pattern configurations are still active during analysis but must be managed within CAST Management Studio rather than the AIP Console.
  9. Overview of CAST AIP installation and deployment paths

The CAST AIP deployment process varies based on the customer's current status and goals. There are two primary installation scenarios:

    1. New Customer Installation: Used for new CAST customers or when deploying on new hardware to onboard a new Application.
    2. Existing Customer Installation: Used by customers transitioning from 'legacy' CAST AIP to the AIP Console. This can involve re-purposing an existing legacy deployment or importing an Application previously managed with CAST Management Studio into the AIP Console.
  10. Overview of CAST Engineering Dashboard Report Builder

The Report Builder allows users to create custom reports based on existing CAST Engineering Dashboard content. The process of building a report involves three main steps: defining a report name and ID, declaring a sequential list of sections to display, and configuring parameters for those sections (such as section titles, Snapshots, or Applications).
  11. Overview of CAST AIP Console

CAST AIP Console is a front-end web application used to configure, run, and manage CAST AIP analyses across multiple analysis machines. It provides an Application Overview that tracks application state (versions, analysis, and snapshots), identifies technologies and frameworks, and matches technology surveys with delivered source code. This tool is compatible with CAST AIP 8.3 and AIP Console version 1.8.x or greater.
