https://directus.com/docs/A backend for building projects that connects to your database. Directus provides a Data Studio for managing data models, collections, and fields, as well as APIs for fetching data, authenticating users, and uploading files. Key features include real-time data via WebSockets, content versioning, collaborative editing, a visual editor, and granular access control.
What's inside Directus
- The Directus Model Context Protocol (MCP) server allows AI assistants to connect directly to a Directus instance. This enables AI tools to manage content, prototype data models, and build automation workflows without manual data copying. The AI assistant operates using existing Directus permissions and maintains a complete audit trail of all changes. Global delete protection is disabled by default for security.
Overview of Single Sign-On (SSO) in Directus
Directus allows users to authenticate using external providers via Single Sign-On (SSO). To implement SSO, you must create an application/configuration on your chosen external provider and configure the corresponding environment variables in Directus.Overview of the Directus Visual Editor
The Directus Visual Editor allows users to edit website content visually and in-place. It enables users to navigate a website freely and edit any linked item on a page without needing to navigate to a specific collection in the Directus Studio. Implementation requires two components: a Frontend Library to connect the website to Directus, and a Studio Module that renders the website within Directus to facilitate in-place editing.Overview of AI integration options in Directus
Directus provides three primary ways to integrate AI into workflows:
- AI Assistant: A conversational assistant built directly into the Directus Data Studio UI, ideal for content editors and quick tasks without requiring external client setup.
- MCP Server: Implements the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to connect external AI tools (such as Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, or Cursor) to Directus, allowing developers and power users to interact with Directus from their preferred IDE or AI client.
- AI Translations: A feature within the translations interface that allows for real-time, one-click translation of content fields across multiple languages, supporting glossaries and style guides for consistency.
Overview of Directus Access Control
Access Control in Directus allows administrators to manage what users and roles can create, read, update, delete, and share. It is managed within the Settings module. The system uses a hierarchy where Users are assigned Roles, and Roles (or Users directly) are assigned Policies. Policies are additive; they can grant additional permissions but cannot take away permissions granted by another policy.Overview of AI integration options in Directus
Directus provides three primary ways to integrate AI into workflows:
- AI Assistant: A conversational assistant built directly into the Directus Data Studio UI. It is designed for content editors and quick tasks without requiring additional client setup.
- MCP Server: Uses the Model Context Protocol to connect external AI tools (such as Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, or Cursor) to Directus. This is ideal for developers and complex workflows.
- AI Translations: Allows for the translation of content fields into multiple languages directly from the translations interface, supporting real-time streaming and the use of glossaries or style guides.
Overview of Directus actions in Zapier
Directus actions allow you to perform operations on Directus data when triggered by other apps in a Zapier workflow. Supported resources include Items (collection entries), Users, and Files.Overview of Directus MCP
The Directus MCP server implements the Model Context Protocol, enabling AI assistants to connect directly to a Directus instance. This removes the need for manual copy-pasting of data between AI tools and the CMS. The AI assistant operates using existing Directus permissions, ensuring that data access is controlled by the user's defined roles.
Requirements: Directus v11.12+ is required. For older versions, a Local MCP alternative is available.
Overview of Directus AI Assistant
The Directus AI Assistant is an embedded conversational tool that allows users to interact with their Directus instance using natural language. It can be used for:
- Content Management: Creating, updating, and organizing items in collections.
- Schema Operations: Exploring the data model and adding new fields or collections.
- Flow Automation: Creating and manually triggering Flows.
- Data Exploration: Querying data and understanding schema structures.
- File Analysis: Uploading and analyzing images, documents, audio, and video.
Overview of Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) in Directus
Two-factor authentication (2FA) in Directus requires a one-time password (OTP) generated by an external authenticator app or password manager to complete the login process. This security measure applies to both the Data Studio and API logins. 2FA can be enabled or enforced via the user page in the Data Studio.Overview of Directus AI Assistant Tools
The AI Assistant uses tools to perform actions within Directus. To optimize the context window, the assistant discovers tools on demand using three root tools:search(finds and loads tool details),execute(runs a discovered tool), andschema(inspects collections). All tools strictly adhere to the current user's existing permissions; if a user lacks access to a collection or action in Directus, the AI cannot perform it either.Overview of Directus Extensions
Extensions allow developers to enhance Directus functionality for specific projects or publish them to the Directus Marketplace. Extensions run within the same environment as the main application, providing access to underlying services and UI components. Because extensions execute code inside the Directus server, security best practices should be followed regarding extension management and Marketplace trust settings.
