https://amical.ai/docsOpen-source AI dictation for macOS, Windows, iOS, and Android. Amical turns voice into text in any app using local or cloud AI models, featuring AI formatting, custom vocabulary, snippets, and voice-first notes.
What's inside Amical
- Amical is an open-source (MIT license) desktop dictation application for macOS and Windows. It allows users to dictate text into any focused application (editors, chat windows, email drafts) by holding a key or using a floating desktop widget. Transcription can be performed locally using Whisper or in the cloud via sign-in. The app supports offline operation once a local model is configured and allows users to save notes within the application.
Fix focus-stealing issues on Windows
If Amical keeps popping up and stealing focus on Windows, ensure you are on version 1.9.3 or newer (check Settings → About).
If you are on a version older than 1.7.7 and cannot see the 'Check for Updates' button, perform a manual launch to trigger the update:
- Fully quit Amical (Right-click system tray icon → Quit).
- Press Win + R.
- Enter
%LocalAppData%\Amical\Amical.exeand press Enter. - Verify the version in Settings → About is now 1.9.3 or newer.
Update Amical to the latest version
Updates can be managed via Settings → About. Click 'Check for Updates' to find new versions. If an update is available, the sidebar will show 'Update Ready' and the button will change to 'Restart to Install'.
For versions older than 1.7.7 (which lack the update button), download the latest version manually from amical.ai/download and install it over the existing copy; local data will be preserved.
Configure AI dictation formatting with Personalization skills
Amical uses 'skills' to determine how dictation is formatted based on the active application or website. These skills control the polishing level, tone, and formatting ruleset applied to the text. Skills only execute when AI formatting is enabled.
Skill Selection Logic
When dictating, Amical selects a skill based on the focused app or active browser tab hostname in this priority:
- Custom Skill: The first matching custom skill is used.
- Default Skill: If no custom skill matches, the corresponding built-in default skill is used.
- Catch-all: If no match is found, the general 'Default' skill is applied.
Use the Amical desktop widget for hands-free recording
The desktop widget is a floating pill element that stays on top of all windows. It allows users to start and stop hands-free recordings with a single click. The widget is draggable, and its position is persisted across launches on both macOS and Windows.
Recording behavior via the widget follows the same constraints as the hands-free shortcut: it has a 6-minute maximum duration and will automatically stop after 5 seconds of silence.
Use Draft to generate and insert text via voice instructions
Draft allows you to speak an instruction (e.g., "reply that I'll join the call five minutes late") and have Amical generate the text for review before it is inserted into your document. This differs from standard dictation, which transcribes words verbatim.
Steps to use Draft:
- Hold the Draft shortcut.
- Speak your instruction.
- Release the key to generate the draft and open the review window.
- Press Enter to insert the text into the focused application.
Rewriting selected text: If you have text selected in an app, holding the Draft shortcut and speaking an instruction will cause Amical to rewrite the selection. The result appears in the review window and can be inserted by pressing Enter.
macOS Default: Fn+Ctrl Windows Default: Ctrl+Win+AltAccess and manage Amical billing and plans
Billing and plan management are handled via the web portal, not directly inside the desktop app. Plan details are only visible to organization owners and admins; members can see usage but cannot change plans or payments.
Ways to access billing:
- From the desktop app: Sign in and click Usage & Billing in the sidebar under your account.
- In a browser: Sign in at
app.amical.aiand select the Billing tab in the sidebar under your organization.
Manage billing and subscription plans
To check usage or upgrade your plan, sign in to the desktop sidebar and click 'Usage & Billing', or visit app.amical.ai directly in a browser.Manage and edit Custom Vocabulary entries
To modify or remove vocabulary entries, hover over any row in the Vocabulary list to reveal the edit and delete buttons. Editing uses the same dialog as adding a new word. Deleting an entry will prompt for confirmation.Rebind Amical keyboard shortcuts
To change a global shortcut:
- Navigate to Settings → Shortcuts.
- Click the chip corresponding to the shortcut you wish to change.
- Press the desired key combination. Amical captures the input live.
Note: If the new combination conflicts with a system shortcut or another Amical binding, the change will be reverted and a conflict notification will appear in a toast.
Change or cancel Amical subscriptions
Plan changes are initiated via the plan cards on the billing page:
- Upgrade (Free → Premium): Opens a checkout flow for monthly or yearly billing.
- Switch Interval: Switching between monthly and yearly Premium plans is handled via checkout with proration.
- Enterprise: Requires contacting support via the Enterprise card or emailing
support@amical.ai.
Effectivity:
- Upgrades: Take effect immediately.
- Downgrades/Cancellations: Take effect at the end of the current billing period.
Billing Portal: For self-serve plans (Dodo), use the Manage billing button to update payment methods, download invoices, change billing emails, or cancel subscriptions.
Invite new members to an Amical organization
Invite teammates by entering their email address. Amical sends a magic link that the recipient must click to accept. Once they sign in or sign up, they are added to the active member list.
Important Constraints:
- Pending invitations count toward your plan's seat limit.
- If you reach your seat limit, sending further invitations will fail until a seat is freed (via a declined invite, expired invite, or removing a member).
