Overview of Nx build system capabilities
Nx is a build system for JavaScript and TypeScript monorepos (extensible to other languages via plugins) designed to maintain fast development and CI cycles as codebases scale. It addresses common monorepo challenges such as slow builds, complex task dependencies, flaky CI, and architectural erosion through the following core features:
- Task Caching: Caches results to avoid rebuilding the same code twice.
- Codebase Analysis: Generates project and task graphs to visualize and manage dependencies.
- Intelligent Orchestration: Runs tasks in the correct order and parallelizes execution where possible.
- Boundary Enforcement: Uses module boundary rules to prevent unwanted dependencies between projects.
- CI Optimization: Provides remote caching, distributed task execution, and task splitting across multiple machines.
- Flakiness Management: Automatically detects and re-runs flaky tests and provides self-healing CI capabilities.
