Overview of Nx build system capabilities
Nx is a build system for JavaScript and TypeScript monorepos (extensible to other languages via plugins) designed to maintain development and CI speed as a codebase scales. It addresses common monorepo challenges such as slow builds, complex task pipelines, flaky CI, and architectural erosion through the following features:
- Intelligent Caching: Caches task results to avoid rebuilding unchanged code.
- Codebase Analysis: Generates project and task graphs to visualize and manage dependencies.
- Task Orchestration: Executes tasks in the correct order and parallelizes them where possible.
- Boundary Enforcement: Uses module boundary rules to prevent unwanted dependencies between projects.
- CI Optimization: Provides remote caching, distributed task execution, and task splitting across multiple machines.
- Flakiness Management: Automatically detects and re-runs flaky tests and provides self-healing CI capabilities.
