What's inside FinderUtilities

  1. Remove FinderUtilities

    master

To completely remove FinderUtilities from your system:

    1. Kill the RightClickExtension process.
    2. Delete FinderUtilities.app from your computer.

If you are a developer building the app in Xcode, you should also delete the Xcode archive and derived data folders containing the project files and ensure any running RightClickExtension processes are terminated. Once the app and extension are removed, it will no longer appear in System Preferences > Extensions.

  2. Install FinderUtilities

    master

To install FinderUtilities, download the application from the releases page (or compile from source), move it to your /Applications directory, and run it once. Running the application for the first time will automatically open System Preferences > Extensions, where you must enable the extension.

Note for macOS Catalina and later: Due to PPPC/folder access restrictions, you may need to grant FinderUtilities Full Disk Access in System Settings to ensure it can successfully launch Terminal.app in user directories.

    1. Copy FinderUtilities.app to /Applications
    2. Run FinderUtilities.app
    3. Enable the extension in System Preferences > Extensions
  3. Install or remove the App Extension via pluginkit

    master

If you prefer using the command line, you can manually manage the registration of the Finder extension using the pluginkit tool. This is useful for developers or users who want to bypass the standard application launch flow.

To install and approve the extension: Run pluginkit -a pointing to the .appex bundle inside the application.

To remove the extension: Run pluginkit -r pointing to the .appex bundle inside the application.

    # Install and approve the extension
    pluginkit -a FinderUtilities.app/Contents/PlugIns/RightClickExtension.appex/

    # Remove the extension
    pluginkit -r FinderUtilities.app/Contents/PlugIns/RightClickExtension.appex/
  4. Use FinderUtilities in Finder

    master

Once the extension is installed and enabled, you can access its features by right-clicking (or control-clicking) within the Finder folder structure. The extension provides three primary actions:

    1. Launch Terminal: Opens Terminal.app directly to the current directory.
    2. Create Empty File: Creates an empty text file named empty.txt in the selected directory.
    3. Copy Paths: Copies the absolute paths of one or more selected files or directories to the pasteboard (clipboard).
  5. FinderUtilities technical specifications
