What's inside Silakka54
- Silakka54 is a 54-key column-staggered split keyboard based on the RP2040 Zero microcontroller. The design is inspired by the REVIUNG41 and Corne keyboards. The PCB features hotswap sockets for easy switch replacement.
Hardware specifications for Silakka54
mainSwitch Compatibility
- Socket Type: Hotswap sockets.
- Switch Style: Designed for MX-style key switches. The current top plate only supports MX-style switches, though the PCB supports 5-pin switches.
Microcontroller
- Base: RP2040 Zero.
Firmware Recommendation
- It is recommended to use Vial firmware for this keyboard.
Final mechanical assembly
main- Attach PCB to Plate: Secure the PCB to the bottom plate using the M2 bolts.
- Install Switches: Attach the MX compatible switches to the top plate.
- Inspect Pins: Before pressing the plates together, verify that no switch pins are twisted or damaged.
- Press Together: Press the top plate (with switches) into the PCB.
Troubleshooting
- Fitment Issues: If the PCB does not fit well with the base, cut small pieces off next to the threads. (Note: This is a known issue to be addressed in future models).
- Stability: It is recommended to add small rubber feet to the bottom plate.
- Testing: If using the
silakka54_vialfirmware, use the Vial software matrix tester to verify switch functionality.
Assemble the PCB and RP2040 Zero
mainPCB Orientation
The PCB is designed for double-sided use. Refer to the provided images for orientation.
RP2040 Zero Installation
- Flipping: The right side RP2040 must be flipped.
- Clearance: Do not solder the RP2040 too close to the PCB; leave a 2mm gap. Ensure the pin header legs are long enough.
- Firmware Access: Since the RP2040 Zero lacks a dedicated RESET pin, ensure you have physical access to the RESET and BOOT buttons to upload or change firmware.
Firmware Recommendation
It is recommended to install the firmware on the RP2040 Zero before assembly. The
.uf2file is located in thefirmwarefolder. If firmware is already installed, double-pressing the RESET button will put the device into bootloader mode.Solder and connect the keyboard halves

Solder the following components:
- Kailh Hotswap Sockets
- PJ320D TRRS audio sockets
- RP2040 Zero controllers
Connecting Halves
Connect the two halves using the TRRS cable.
CRITICAL SAFETY WARNING: Never connect or disconnect the TRRS cable while the keyboard is powered. Doing so can cause a short circuit.
Prepare 3D printed parts and plates
main3D Printing
STL files do not require support. PLA plastic is recommended. Parts have been tested using a 0.4mm nozzle.
Plate Preparation
Insert the M2 heat set inserts into the bottom plates using a soldering iron.
