A Python wrapper for the YouTube Data API V3 (version 0.9.9) that provides a modern, resource-oriented Client and a legacy Api interface. It supports public data access via API keys and private data access through OAuth2 authorization. The library allows developers to manage videos, playlists, subscriptions, and channel settings, though it does not support Analytics, Reporting, or Live Streaming APIs.

What's inside python-youtube

  1. Introduction to Python-Youtube

    master

    Python-Youtube is a Python wrapper for the YouTube Data API. It allows developers to integrate YouTube features into Python applications, such as uploading videos, managing playlists and subscriptions, and updating channel settings.

    Compatibility: Works on Python 3.6 and newer.

    Limitations: This library only supports the DATA API. It does not support the Analytics and Reporting APIs or the Live Streaming API.

  2. How the pyyoutube resource structure works

    master
    The library has transitioned to a high-level, object-oriented structure to improve maintainability and developer experience. Instead of generic API calls, every YouTube resource (like channels, videos, etc.) is represented by its own dedicated class accessible through the main Client instance. This allows for a more intuitive programming experience where resources are organized hierarchically (e.g., client.channels.list(...)).
  3. Accessing User Data via OAuth

    master
    The standard API key method is used for retrieving public YouTube data. If your application requires access to private user data, you must use OAuth instead. To do this, you need to create credentials for an OAuth client ID in the Google Cloud Console. Refer to the Authorization documentation for specific implementation details.
  4. How pyyoutube.Client and pyyoutube.Api differ

    master

    The library provides two main ways to interact with the YouTube Data API V3:

    1. pyyoutube.Client (Recommended): A modern, feature-rich interface. It uses a resource-based approach (e.g., client.channels.list()) and is the preferred way to operate the DATA API.
    2. pyyoutube.Api: A legacy interface maintained for backward compatibility. It uses method-based calls (e.g., api.get_channel_info()).

    Use Client for new projects to take advantage of the latest features and structure.

  5. Choose between Api and Client entry points

    master

    The python-youtube library provides two distinct ways to interact with the YouTube Data API:

    1. Api: An older implementation maintained for backward compatibility with legacy code.
    2. Client: The new, recommended implementation. It provides enhanced capabilities and a more structured interface for operating the API.
  6. Perform the OAuth2 authorization flow

    master

    To authorize a user via OAuth2 using pyyoutube.Api, follow these steps:

    1. Initialize the API with your client_id and client_secret.
    2. Get the authorization URL by calling api.get_authorization_url(). This returns a tuple containing the URL and a state string.
    3. User Authorization: Direct the user to the provided URL. After they authorize, they will be redirected to a URL (the authorization_response).
    4. Generate Access Token: Pass that redirected URL into api.generate_access_token(authorization_response="...") to receive an AccessToken object containing the access_token, expires_in, and token_type.
    from pyyoutube import Api

    # 1. Initialize
    api = Api(client_id="client key", client_secret="client secret")

    # 2. Get authorization url
    # Returns: (url, state)
    auth_url, state = api.get_authorization_url()
    print(f"Please visit: {auth_url}")

    # 3. User visits URL and copies the resulting response URL
    response_url = "https://localhost/?code=..."

    # 4. Generate the token
    access_token_obj = api.generate_access_token(authorization_response=response_url)
    print(access_token_obj.access_token)
  7. Initialize the pyyoutube Client

    master

    The pyyoutube.Client class is the primary entry point for interacting with the YouTube API. You can initialize it in three ways depending on your required permissions:

    1. Public Data: Use an api_key for read-only access to public information.
    2. Authorized User Data: Use an existing access_token to perform actions on behalf of a user (e.g., uploading videos).
    3. OAuth2 Flow: Provide client_id and client_secret to initiate a full authorization flow.

    You can also initialize the client using a client_secret_path pointing to a JSON file. Note that only web and certain installed client types are supported. The client will automatically use the first entry in the redirect_uris field as the DEFAULT_REDIRECT_URI.

    from pyyoutube import Client

    # For public data
    cli = Client(api_key="your api key")

    # For authorized actions with an existing token
    cli = Client(access_token="Access Token with permissions")

    # Using a client secret file
    cli = Client(client_secret_path="path/to/client_secret.json")
  8. Instantiate the pyyoutube.Api class

    master

    The pyyoutube.Api class is the primary interface for interacting with the YouTube Data API. You can instantiate it in three ways depending on your authentication needs:

    1. API Key: For simple, unauthenticated or public data access.
    2. Access Token: If you already possess a valid OAuth2 access token.
    3. OAuth2 Flow: By providing client_id and client_secret, you can initiate a full OAuth2 authorization flow to obtain a token from a user.
    from pyyoutube import Api

    # Option 1: Initialize with an API key
    api = Api(api_key="your api key")

    # Option 2: Initialize with an existing access token
    api = Api(access_token='your access token')

    # Option 3: Initialize for OAuth2 flow
    api = Api(client_id="client key", client_secret="client secret")
  9. Set up Google Cloud Project and YouTube Data API

    master

    To use python-youtube, you must first configure a project in the Google Cloud Console:

    1. Create a Project: Go to the Google Cloud Console and create a new project.
    2. Enable the API:
      • Navigate to the APIs & Services tab.
      • Click + ENABLE APIS AND SERVICES.
      • Search for YouTube DATA API and select it.
      • Click the ENABLE button.
    3. Generate Credentials:
      • Click Create credentials.
      • For public data access, select YouTube DATA API v3.
      • Choose Other non-UI (e.g. cron job, daemon).
      • Select Public data.
      • Complete the process to generate an API Key.
