A Python implementation of election forecasting features inspired by Nate Silver's 538 model. Designed as an educational resource for data analysis using pandas and statsmodels, it replicates methodology from FiveThirtyEight and the New York Times using polling data from Real Clear Politics and historical data from Electoral Vote.

  1. Overview of the 538 Model Replication

    master

This project is a Python-based replication of features from Nate Silver's 538 Election Forecasting Model. It is intended as an educational example of how to perform data analysis using pandas and statsmodels rather than a production-grade forecasting tool.

    Key Characteristics:

    • Methodology: Based on interpretations of methodology posts from the original FiveThirtyEight site and the New York Times.
    • Data Source: Polling data is sourced from Real Clear Politics (last updated 10/2/2012) and historical data from Electoral Vote.
    • Limitations: The polling data and pollster reliability/weighting data are outdated. Updating polling data requires manual intervention or script updates to crawl Real Clear Politics due to changes in their directory access permissions.
  2. Install required dependencies for the 538 Model

To use this project, you must have the following third-party Python packages installed. The project uses these for data manipulation, statistical modeling, and visualization:

    • matplotlib (Visualization)
    • numpy (Numerical computing)
    • pandas (Data manipulation)
    • scikit-learn (Machine learning)
    • scipy (Scientific computing)
    • statsmodels (Statistical modeling)
    • IPython (Required for running the provided notebooks)
