What's inside phpThumb

  1. Overview of phpThumb() functionality

    master

phpThumb() is a PHP-based thumbnail generator that creates thumbnails from GIF, PNG, or JPEG images on the fly. It leverages either the GD library or ImageMagick to perform image processing.

    Key capabilities include:

    • Configurable Output Size: You can generate thumbnails larger or smaller than the source image.
    • Cropping/Portioning: You can process the entire image or specify only a portion of the original.
    • Flexible Sources: Images can be loaded from physical files on the server or retrieved from a database.
    • Advanced Resampling: Uses true color and resampling if GD v2.0+ is available; otherwise, it falls back to low-color and simple resizing.
    • GIF Support: Includes a GIFutil class to support GIFs even on GD versions without native support.
    • Anti-Hotlinking: Features to prevent unauthorized use of your server for resizing or linking to images from external domains.
    • Caching: Includes a cache feature to reduce server load by storing generated thumbnails.
  2. Use phpThumb() demo scripts to verify configuration and features

    master

The phpThumb() distribution includes several demonstration scripts to help you verify your environment and understand the library's capabilities:

    • Configuration Checking: Use phpThumb.demo.check.php to check your configuration file and server settings. It will warn you about potential problems.
    • Feature Exploration: Use phpThumb.demo.demo.php to see a wide variety of samples covering different features and filters. Note: You must download sample image files separately from http://phpthumb.sourceforge.net/demo to use this.
    • Object-Oriented Usage: To see how to use phpThumb() as an object, refer to phpThumb.demo.object.php or its simplified version phpThumb.demo.object.simple.php.
  3. Configure the TTF font directory for text watermarks

    master

phpThumb uses TTF fonts for text watermarks. By default, it looks in the fonts/ directory. If you need to use a different directory for your TTF fonts, you can specify an alternate path in the phpThumb.config.php configuration file.

If you are not using text watermarks that require TTF fonts, you can safely delete or ignore the fonts/ directory.

  4. Configure phpThumb via phpThumb.config.php

    master

phpThumb requires a configuration file named phpThumb.config.php to exist in the root directory to function. If this file is missing, the library will exit with a warning.

If you are setting up the library for the first time, you should rename the provided phpThumb.config.php.default file to phpThumb.config.php.

  5. Implement a photo gallery or random image display with phpThumb() demos

    master

You can use the following demo scripts as templates for specific image display implementations:

    • Photo Gallery: phpThumb.demo.gallery.php demonstrates a basic photo gallery with the ability to browse subdirectories. It can be paired with phpThumb.demo.showpic.php for full-size popup displays.
    • Popup Resizing: phpThumb.demo.showpic.php demonstrates how to auto-resize a popup window to match the dimensions of the image being displayed.
    • Random Selection: phpThumb.demo.random.php shows how to select and display a random thumbnail from a directory of images.
