https://github.com/everythingsmarthome/everything-presence-liteA hardware presence sensor featuring mmWave technology and an illuminance sensor, designed for seamless integration with Home Assistant via ESPHome. The device supports various mmWave sensors including HiLink LD2450, LD2410C, and DFRobot SEN0395, and includes a dedicated Zone Configurator for visual mapping of presence zones.
What's inside Everything Presence Lite
- Everything Presence Lite is a smart home presence sensor that utilizes mmWave technology for presence detection and includes a light level illuminance sensor. It is designed to integrate directly with Home Assistant using ESPHome.
Extend functionality with optional hardware modules
mainThe Everything Presence Lite includes spare GPIO pins that allow for hardware expansion via optional modules. Currently, the supported expansion is the Carbon Dioxide (CO2) module. Future modules are planned for release.Identify Everything Presence Lite Board components
mainThe Everything Presence Lite (EPL) board is the main PCB containing the ESP32 microcontroller for Wi-Fi connectivity and sensor management. If you purchased the board only, you must provide a compatible mmWave sensor.
Key components labeled on the board include:
- ESP32-WROOM-32E: 4MB flash version (the device controller).
- BH1750: Light Illuminance sensor.
- mmWave Sensor Header Slots: Dedicated slots for DFRobot SEN0395, HiLink LD2450, HiLink LD2410C, and various Seeed mmWave sensors.
- USB-C: For power and programming.
- 5v Header input: For optional power.
- GPIO pins: 4 additional pins available for expansion.
How the web installer manifest URL is constructed
mainThe web installer uses a specific manifest URL pattern to target the correct firmware based on your hardware configuration. The URL is constructed using the base path
https://everythingsmarthome.github.io/everything-presence-lite/followed by a filename following this pattern:everything-presence-lite-ha[sensorSuffix][optionSuffix][moduleSuffix]-manifest.jsonSuffix Mapping
Sensor Suffixes:

mainThe Lite can track up to 3 targets (sources of movement, typically people) simultaneously. For each target, the sensor provides:
- X and Y coordinates (used for zone detection)
- Distance from the sensor
- Angle relative to the sensor
- Speed of movement
- Active status (whether the target is currently detected)
Understand mmWave sensor compatibility
mainThe Everything Presence Lite is designed to be compatible with various mmWave sensors. While the guide uses the HiLink LD2450 (which supports tracking up to 3 targets in 2D space) as the primary example, the board also supports:
- DFRobot SEN0395
- HiLink LD2410C
- Various Seeed mmWave sensors
Getting started with Everything Presence Lite
mainDepending on your hardware configuration, follow one of these two paths to begin:
- Unassembled Kit: If you have the Everything Presence Lite Kit with a 3D printed case, you must first complete the assembly process.
- Fully Assembled: If your device arrived fully assembled in an injection moulded case, you can skip assembly and proceed directly to connecting the device to WiFi.
Connect Everything Presence Lite to Home Assistant
mainIf you have already flashed the Home Assistant firmware onto your Lite device during the Updating and Connecting to WiFi process, you can use this section to integrate the device with your Home Assistant instance. This integration allows you to discover the device and access its presence entities.Optimize EPL placement to avoid false detections
mainBecause mmWave sensors are significantly more sensitive than standard PIR sensors, physical placement is critical to prevent false occupancy triggers.
Mounting Requirements
- Stability is key: Mount the EPL on a wall or a very sturdy object (e.g., a shelf or cabinet).
- Avoid vibrations: Do not mount the sensor on objects that vibrate, such as air-conditioning units, as these vibrations will be interpreted as genuine movement.
Environmental Triggers to Avoid
Avoid placing the sensor directly in front of or near objects that move frequently. Common mmWave triggers include:
- AC units
- Plants moving in the wind
- Curtains moving in the wind
- Water droplets (e.g., in a bathroom)
- Ceiling fans
- Fans inside of a laptop or TV
Wall Penetration
Note that mmWave can "see through" objects, including very thin walls. Movement in an adjacent room may be detected if the wall is thin enough.
Configure and enable Zones
mainZones allow you to define specific areas within a room to trigger automations based on a target's location. The Lite supports up to 4 individual zones.
Creating a Zone
A zone is defined using 5 entities:
Zone X BeginZone Y BeginZone X EndZone Y End- (Implicitly required to activate the zone)
Enabling additional zones (2, 3, or 4)
Zones 2-4 are disabled by default. To enable them:
- Find the disabled entities in the Home Assistant device menu.
- Click the entity to open the popup.
- Click the settings icon in the right-hand corner of the popup.
- Toggle the entity to enabled.
- Wait 30 seconds, then refresh the page.
- Repeat for all 5 entities required for that specific zone.
Install ESPHome firmware on Everything Presence Lite
mainTo integrate the Everything Presence Lite directly with Home Assistant, you can flash the latest ESPHome firmware using a web-based installer.
Prerequisites
- Connect the Lite device to a USB port on your computer.
- Use a supported web browser like Google Chrome.
- If you cannot see a USB Serial port or receive a "Failed to open serial port" error, you may need to install the CH340 driver.
Installation Steps
- Select Home Assistant as your Smart Home Platform.
- Choose one of the following Home Assistant options:
- Bluetooth Proxy: Enables Bluetooth Proxy and Improv. Note: This may cause WiFi connectivity issues.
- No Bluetooth: Disables Bluetooth Proxy and Improv. This is recommended for improved WiFi stability if you do not need Bluetooth Proxy functionality.
- Click the Connect button and select the appropriate USB port from the list.
- Click the Install button to begin the process.
Once the installation is complete, you can connect the device to your WiFi.
Install the Everything Presence Zone Configurator Add-on
mainThe Zone Configurator is a visual tool for creating and managing zones in Home Assistant with real-time tracking.
To install via the Home Assistant Add-on Store:
