How SkillPointer solves the 'Token Tax' problem
mainAI agents (like OpenCode and Claude Code) use a 3-level progressive disclosure system for skills:
- Level 1 (Startup): The agent automatically loads the
nameanddescriptionof every skill into the<available_skills>block in the system prompt. - Level 2 (Match): When a skill is matched, the full
SKILL.mdbody is loaded. - Level 3 (Reference): Scripts, templates, or linked files are loaded when explicitly referenced.
The Problem: As the number of skills grows (e.g., 2,000 skills), the Level 1 startup cost becomes massive (~80,000 tokens), which increases API costs, slows response times, and degrades reasoning due to the "lost in the middle" phenomenon.
The Solution: SkillPointer moves the bulk of skills into a Hidden Vault (unseen by the Level 1 scanner) and replaces them with a small number of Category Pointers. The AI matches a pointer, then uses its native tools (list_dir, view_file) to browse the vault and retrieve the specific skill it needs.
