What's inside Bitwig Studio Controller Extensions

  1. Use the Generic E-Drum extension

    main

The Generic E-Drum extension is a MIDI controller extension designed for two primary functions:

    1. MIDI Note Input: It creates a MIDI note input to act as a generic E-Drum controller.
    2. Transport Control: It supports generic transport control (Play, Stop, etc.) via System Exclusive (sysex) messages.
  2. Functionality of AKAI Advance Keyboards extension

    main

The AKAI Advance Keyboards extension provides mapping for specific controls to Bitwig devices.

    Supported Controls:

    • 8 Knobs: Mapped to the remote controls of the currently selected device.
    • Pads: Fully functional.
    • Keys: Fully functional.
    • Mod-Wheel: Fully functional.
    • Pitch-Bend: Fully functional.

    Unsupported Controls:

    • Transport controls.
    • Other buttons on the hardware.
  3. Use LAUNCH mode on Launchkey MK2

In LAUNCH mode, the controller is configured for clip launching and track volume control:

    • Drum-pads: Launches clips within an 8 track x 2 scene window.
    • Track ◂▸ and Scene ▴▾: Used for navigation.
    • Round ▹ buttons: Used to launch the entire scene.
    • 8 Knobs: Freely mappable (independent of PLAY mode settings).

  5. Set up the AKAI MPK mini MK3 controller

    main

The AKAI MPK mini MK3 extension provides note input via keys and pads, and maps knobs to the remote controls of the currently selected device (displaying the target control name on the device screen).

No manual configuration is required on the hardware itself, as Bitwig Studio sends a custom "program" to the device upon connection.

Important: Do not use the "PROG SELECT" function on the device, as this will interfere with the Bitwig Studio connection.

  6. Use PLAY mode on Launchkey Mini

    main

In PLAY mode, the controller is configured for remote control and device selection:

    • 8 Knobs: Mapped to remote controls.
    • Upper 8 Drum-pads: Used to select remote control parameter pages.
    • Lower 8 Drum-pads: Used to select the device within the device chain.
    • Track ◂▸: Changes the selected track.

You can open the popup browser by pressing one of the round ▹ buttons (replacing) or by selecting an empty device (which inserts at the end of the chain).
